Family-Friendly Wine Farms in the Swartland

8 family friendly wine farms in the Swartland: Kloovenburg play park, Swartland Winery jungle gym, Org de Rac Open Day, drive times and attractions.

If you're looking for family friendly wine farms in the Swartland, this wheat-and-vine country north of Cape Town is a quieter alternative to Stellenbosch or Paarl. The usable set is small but honest: 8 farms (4 with a fuller family offer, 4 with a limited one), from Kloovenburg's play park and vineyard tractor rides to Swartland Winery's jungle gym and grape juice. Most sit about 53 to 86 minutes from Cape Town without traffic — a solid day trip once you clear the city, with Riebeek Kasteel and Malmesbury as easy hubs.

This guide is for parents. We've split the list honestly: fuller family offer first, then limited, then nearby attractions.

How we chose these farms

Every farm here was checked against its own official website in October 2026. We looked for play areas, kids menus, non-alcoholic kids options, animals or farm life, casual food, lawns, and activities such as tractor rides or farm walks.

  • Fuller family offer: a dedicated kids feature (play park, jungle gym, kids menu or kids party offer) plus casual food or outdoor space. There are 4 of these.
  • Limited family offer: children can tag along, but the kids story is thinner — monthly Open Day play, a pizza night, a hotel canteen pour, or a BBQ restaurant without a play area. There are 4 of these.

Please check before you go. Opening days are tight (several venues close Monday–Tuesday), Open Day kit is monthly-only, and stay-guest amenities are not walk-in playgrounds. Our booking guide covers what to ask.

Quick picks by what your kids love

Best for play areas and running around

  • Kloovenburg: play park at Kringe in die Bos, plus tractor rides through the vineyards (Fri–Sun, public holidays and Western Cape school holidays).
  • Nieuwedrift: play park beside child- and pet-friendly lawns.
  • Swartland Winery: jungle gym with grape juice and flavoured milkshakes for kids.
  • Org de Rac (limited): jumping castle, jungle gym and kiddies tractor rides on the monthly Open Day only (last Saturday).

Best for casual food kids will eat

  • Kloovenburg: self-service open-air eatery at Kringe in die Bos.
  • Nieuwedrift: wood-fired pizza and burgers.
  • Meerhof: Kiddies menu (burgers, chicken/fish strips with chips) on the 2024 restaurant menu PDF — confirm it is still current.
  • Marras (limited): farm-to-table BBQ-smoker restaurant in Riebeek West.
  • Wildehurst (limited): café-style MG Canteen at Marrian George in Koringberg.

Best for animals, farm stays and open space

  • AA Badenhorst (limited): Kalmoesfontein farm stays with farm animals, open spaces and dam swimming for overnight guests; wood-fired pizza nights by booking.

Farms with a fuller family offer

Kloovenburg Wine and Olive Estate

Area: Riebeek Kasteel · about 60 min from Cape Town without traffic · kloovenburg.com

Kloovenburg's standout family stop is Kringe in die Bos, a family-friendly open-air restaurant with a play park in a natural setting, self-service eats and tractor rides through the vineyards. Kids birthday parties can be booked (kringe@kloovenburg.com). Day hiking trails need an indemnity form signed at the tasting room.

Good to know: Kringe in die Bos runs Fri–Sun, public holidays and Western Cape school holidays 09:00–16:30 (opening hours, not a holiday programme). Pump track, trampolines and water play appear only on secondary listings — we did not score them. Eight Feet Village on top of the pass is a separate venue.

Meerhof Wine Cellar

Area: Malmesbury · about 60 min from Cape Town without traffic · meerhofwines.co.za

The restaurant menu includes a Kiddies menu (burgers, chicken or fish strips with chips) and kids party packages for ages 3–12, including a jumping castle in the party package. Glamping units welcome all ages and pets by arrangement.

Good to know: the menu PDF we saw was dated 2024 — phone to confirm. Restaurant and tasting closed Monday–Tuesday. A play area / lawn where kids play is mentioned only in a homepage testimonial and secondary listings — not scored.

Nieuwedrift Vineyards

Area: Piketberg · about 84 min from Cape Town without traffic · nieuwedrift.co.za

A restaurant with child- and pet-friendly spaces, a play park and expansive green lawns, serving wood-fired pizza and burgers. Wine tasting Wed–Sun 09:30–15:00; bookings required (064 607 0041).

Good to know: restaurant closed Monday–Tuesday. Book tasting ahead.

Swartland Winery

Area: Malmesbury · about 53 min from Cape Town without traffic · swartlandwinery.co.za

Families are welcome: a jungle gym plus grape juice and flavoured milkshakes for the kids, with cheese platters, sandwiches and wraps for grazing. Among the closest Swartland hops from Cape Town.

Good to know: hours Mon–Thu 09:00–17:00, Fri 09:00–16:00, Sat 09:00–14:00, closed Sunday. Groups over 6 must book.

Farms with a limited family offer

Children can come, but don't expect a full kids' setup every day. These suit a second stop, overnight stay, or a specific event.

AA Badenhorst Family Wines

Area: Malmesbury · about 74 min from Cape Town without traffic · aabadenhorst.com

Relaxed Kalmoesfontein farm with wood-fired pizza nights (book via Dineplan — essential) and family-oriented farm stays where guests wander open spaces, swim in dams and meet the farm animals. Wine tastings by appointment; Wine & Lunch on Wednesday and Friday.

Good to know: farm animals and dam swimming are described for overnight stay guests, not a day-visit playground. No kids menu or play area for day visits. Open dams — supervise closely.

Marras

Area: Riebeek West · about 65 min from Cape Town without traffic · marraswines.co.za

A relaxed farm-to-table BBQ-smoker restaurant with wine tasting, open into the evening Wednesday–Saturday. Tasting was R60 per person for six wines when we checked.

Good to know: restaurant Wed–Fri 12:00–21:00, Sat 11:00–21:00, Sun 11:00–16:00; closed Mon–Tue. Children are not mentioned on the official site; no kids menu or play area. Bookings are wise for dinner.

Org de Rac Organic Wine Estate

Area: Piketberg · about 84 min from Cape Town without traffic · orgderac.com

The kids headline is the monthly Open Day (last Saturday of the month, free entry, gates from 10:00): kiddies tractor rides, jumping castle and jungle gym, plus Neapolitan pizza and roosterkoek burgers. Bookings recommended.

Good to know: those kids features are listed for the Open Day only — not confirmed as everyday facilities. Everyday: tasting and light meals Monday–Saturday 10:00–17:00, closed Sunday and public holidays; groups over 8 book 48 hours ahead.

Wildehurst Wines

Area: Koringberg · about 86 min from Cape Town without traffic · marriangeorge.co.za

Wildehurst wines are poured at the Marrian George MG Canteen (café-style, open to non-residents) in Koringberg, with a croquet lawn on the hotel grounds. It is a boutique hotel setting rather than a walk-in farm playground.

Good to know: MG Canteen reservations are essential for non-residents. Children are not specifically mentioned on the pages we checked. Small pets welcome with prior notice (hotel; one pet-friendly room). A "Play Room" among room amenities was unclear in purpose and was not scored as a kids play area.

Sample half-day and full-day plans

Half-day with toddlers

1. Pick one fuller stop — Swartland Winery (closest) or Kloovenburg's Kringe in die Bos if it is open that day. 2. Arrive near opening, do grape juice or a short wander, then an early lunch within sight of the play area. 3. Head home before nap time. One farm is enough at this age.

Full day with primary-school kids

1. Morning: Kloovenburg play park and tractor ride (check Kringe days), or Swartland Winery jungle gym and grape juice. 2. Lunch: Nieuwedrift pizza and play park if you are heading north, or Meerhof if the kids menu is confirmed current. 3. Optional afternoon: West Coast National Park in season, a Riebeek Kasteel village stroll, or Org de Rac if it is the last-Saturday Open Day. 4. Keep it to two stops and sort out a sober driver first.

Day out with tweens and teens

Try Badenhorst pizza night or a Kalmoesfontein stay, Marras BBQ dinner in Riebeek West, Kloovenburg hiking trails (indemnity at the tasting room), or Wildehurst at the MG Canteen with a croquet lawn. Alcohol tasting is for over-18s only — see SA alcohol age and etiquette.
