Family-Friendly Wine Farms in Stellenbosch
39 family friendly wine farms in Stellenbosch: play areas, kids' tastings, animals and picnics — including Hazendal Wonderdal, Vergelegen, Warwick and Webersburg — plus drive times and day plans.
If you're looking for family friendly wine farms in Stellenbosch, you're in luck. Stellenbosch has more wine estates than any other part of the Cape Winelands, and a good number of them have clearly planned for children: proper jungle gyms, grape-juice and flavoured-milk tastings, animal farms, game drives, picnic baskets and pizza that small people will actually eat. This guide now covers 42 farms, and most of them are about 30 to 50 minutes from Cape Town without traffic. That's close enough for a day trip and short enough that nobody falls apart in the back seat.
This guide is written for parents. We'd rather you arrive at a farm that suits your kids than at a gorgeous one where you spend lunch steering a toddler away from the barrel room. So we've split our list honestly: farms with a fuller family offer first, then farms where the offer is more modest, followed by nearby family attractions.
How we chose these farms
Every farm here was checked against its own official website (and, in a few cases, the Stellenbosch Wine Routes listing as back-up) in October 2026. We looked for the things that make a day out work with children: a play area, a kids menu, a non-alcoholic tasting for kids, animals or farm life, picnics, casual food, lawns, and activities like tractor rides, game drives or trails.
We sorted them into two groups:
- Fuller family offer: at least one dedicated kids' feature (usually a play area, a kids' tasting or menu, or animals) plus outdoor space. There are 22 of these.
- Limited family offer: children are welcome and there's something for them, like a picnic, pizza, wildlife or a garden, but no full kids' setup. We describe exactly what's there. There are 20 of these.
- Family stays (3): Casa Mori, Kings Kloof and the Ladybird Boutique Hotel (Laibach) welcome families as overnight guests only. They're listed separately below and aren't day-visit picks.
Please check before you go. Play equipment gets removed, menus change, restaurants renovate, seasonal offers hibernate in winter, and functions take over lawns. Prices were correct when we checked and may have moved. A quick call the week before saves a lot of disappointment. Our booking guide covers what to ask.

Hazendal Wine Estate

Kids putting, wetland walkways and school-holiday workshops round out a proper multi-age day. Wonderdal sessions are timed and priced separately (weekday and weekend rates differ; school-term and school-holiday tabs apply), so book ahead.
Good to know: the estate is cashless. Confirm which dining venues currently carry kids menus (Wonderdal's families page lists kids menus, deli, pizza and a food truck; Hazendal's dining page highlights Siyalima, Marks Golf Bar and picnics). Wonderdal is also useful on rainy days when outdoor play parks look soggy.

A classic Helderberg day out: the children's adventure garden beside Stables, a vine maze in the East Garden, a verified Stables kiddies restaurant menu, and camphor-forest picnic menus with a kiddies picnic (ages 3–10 when in season). Garden walks, an eco tour (which may include Nguni, bontebok and eland viewing) and the creamery add gentle extras for mixed ages.

A thoroughbred stud with horse paddocks to admire (viewing only), plus padel courts the estate pitches as entertainment for kids, an MTB trail and e-bikes for older children. Da Capo Vineyards
Area: Helderberg · about 49 min from Cape Town without traffic · visits via idiom.co.za
Da Capo is the name of the vineyards around Idiom's restaurant and tasting centre. We found no separate Da Capo cellar door, so the family offer is Idiom's (kids menu, pizza, eco-safari). Book through Idiom.

Open Mon–Sat 09:00–16:00. We didn't verify a play area, kids menu or picnic offer, so treat it as a short, puzzle-friendly tasting.
Kleinood Winery
Area: Stellenbosch Berg · about 49 min from Cape Town without traffic · kleinood.com
The Kleinood Way farm walk greets ducks and feeds donkeys among gardens, the dam and the winery before a tasting platter. Area: Greater Simonsberg · about 42 min from Cape Town without traffic · knorhoek.co.za
For older children only: the venue admits ages 10 and up with parents or guardians (under-10s by prior arrangement), with a smart dress code. The wines are poured at a shared tasting venue, not the original farm, so confirm the address.

Sample half-day and full-day plans
You don't need a strict itinerary, just a few rules of thumb.
Half-day with toddlers (morning to early afternoon)
1. Pick one farm with a play area and a kids' tasting or menu, such as Zevenwacht, Bellevue, Koelenhof (closed Sundays), Skilpadvlei, Spier, Warwick, Webersburg or Hazendal (Wonderdal for ages 5–13; tree playground for littler ones). 2. Arrive close to opening while it's cool and quiet, and do the kids' tasting first. 3. Eat an early lunch within sight of the play area. 4. Head home before nap time. One farm is plenty at this age.
Full day with primary-school kids
1. Morning: animals or activity. Vredenheim's animal farm and Big Cats Park, Hazendal's Wonderdal (ages 5–13; book sessions), Vergelegen's adventure garden (reopens 14 October 2026 after a temporary closure) and vine maze, a Villiera game drive (book ahead), Blaauwklippen's bike park (bring helmets), or Eikendal's weekend tractor rides (September to April). 2. Lunch: a farm with play and casual food. Hartenberg (picnic kids' plate, Thursday to Sunday in season), Warwick (Fountain of Youth picnic), Webersburg dam lawns, Eikendal, Tokara Delicatessen or Zorgvliet. 3. Optional slow afternoon: pizza under the oaks at Simonsig, a dam-side picnic at Lievland, or one of the nearby attractions below. 4. Keep it to two stops, three at most, check the drive between them on your map before you commit, and sort out a sober driver first.
Day out with tweens and teens
Older kids often like scenery, trails, wildlife and a bit of grown-up atmosphere. Try Hazendal's Wonderdal (ages 5–13) with putting or padel for energy, Warwick's Land Rover vineyard safari, Vergelegen's gardens and eco tour, Idiom's eco-safari and a terrace lunch, the Kleinood farm walk (close supervision near the dam), Mooiplaas's 5.6 km trail, Delheim's nature trails (permit required), or a calm tasting at Knorhoek (ages 10 and up). Remind them that the alcohol tasting itself is for over-18s only. Our guide to SA alcohol age and etiquette explains why.

Practical tips for Stellenbosch with kids
- Book lunch, picnics, pairings and game drives, especially on weekends and in school holidays. See our booking reservations guide.
- Budget for play fees. Blaauwklippen, Koelenhof and Vredenheim charge entry for some play or animal areas; Hazendal's Wonderdal is a timed paid session; Lourensford has a parking fee.
- Check opening days and seasons. Koelenhof and Stellenrust close on Sundays, Yonder Hill on Sundays and Mondays. Hartenberg's and Zevenwacht's picnics are seasonal; Vergelegen's picnics close in the cooler months; Bellevue's Manor House tastings close seasonally in winter.
- Don't pack your own picnic for Spier, Zevenwacht, Lourensford, Muratie, Vredenheim or Vergelegen (no private picnics), which don't allow outside food.
- Ask about prams. We only found pram and wheelchair access noted at Lourensford, and some picnic spots, like Zorgvliet's, involve a walk.
- Check the dog policy. Warwick, Bellevue and Lourensford's market welcome leashed dogs; Vredenheim, Vergelegen, Zevenwacht, Longridge, De Meye, Muratie and (generally) Remhoogte don't.
- Skip the adults-only estates for a family day. Rust en Vrede, Dornier, Ernie Els, Clouds and Vrede Wines are not family picks in our audit — beautiful wines, wrong brief with little ones.
- Stonewall's fun run is a one-off. Stonewall Wines near Somerset West invites families to a 5 km vineyard Spring Fun Run on Friday 16 October 2026 (book tickets ahead). Outside that event, tasting is by appointment only and there are no kids amenities, so it isn't a family day stop.
- Plan your transport. Wine tastings and car seats need a plan. Read transporting kids in the Winelands: Uber vs self-drive.
- Match the farm to the child, not the wine list. Our guide on how to choose an age-appropriate wine farm helps.
- Pack well and stay sun-smart. Hats, water and a change of clothes go a long way. See what to pack and our safety tips.
