Family-Friendly Wine Farms in Tulbagh
Only 2 family friendly wine farms in Tulbagh: Montpellier kiddies pairing and pizzas, Tulbagh Winery juice tasting — plus Church Street and museums.
Looking for family friendly wine farms in Tulbagh? Here's the honest answer up front: Tulbagh is a beautiful valley for a wine day, but it is thin pickings for kids. Our outer audit checked 17 Tulbagh estates against their official websites and found only two with a usable family offer — one fuller stop (Montpellier de Tulbagh) and one limited stop (Tulbagh Winery). Neither has a published play area. That is still enough for a relaxed family day if you pair one or two short tastings with Church Street's heritage buildings, the museum complex and a mountain picnic, rather than expecting a jungle-gym wine route.
Tulbagh sits behind the mountains north of Wellington, about 108–110 minutes from Cape Town without traffic. With small children, that is a long drive for a short tasting, so treat Tulbagh as a day trip or weekend add-on. For denser kids' wine days closer to the city, use our Stellenbosch, Paarl and Wellington guides — Wellington is right on your route via the R44.
How we chose these farms
Every Tulbagh farm was checked against its official website in October 2026. We only list yes or limited offers — no invented jungle gyms, kids menus or lawns from secondary listings.
- Fuller family offer (1): Montpellier de Tulbagh — Kiddies Pairing, weekend pizzas and lawned gardens.
- Limited family offer (1): Tulbagh Winery — a R50 kiddies grape-juice-and-treat tasting, and nothing more published.
Several other Tulbagh estates are described as child-friendly on directories and review sites, and a few official sites were down when we checked. None of those claims could be confirmed on official pages, so those farms are not listed. If one of them matters to your plans, phone ahead.
Please check before you go. Hours and food days change; Montpellier also hosts weddings and events. See our booking guide and family wine farms FAQ.
Quick picks
- Kids' tasting plus lunch: Montpellier de Tulbagh — Kiddies Pairing (three non-alcoholic drinks and three snacks), pizzas Friday–Sunday, lawned gardens.
- Quick juice stop in town: Tulbagh Winery — flavoured grape juice and a treat for R50 per child. No food or outdoor space published.
- Best day to go: Friday or Saturday, when Montpellier's pizzas are on and Tulbagh Winery is open. Tulbagh Winery is closed on Sundays.
Farm with a fuller family offer
Montpellier de Tulbagh
Area: Tulbagh · about 108 min from Cape Town without traffic · montpellier.co.za
The most complete family stop in the valley. While adults taste, children get the Kiddies Pairing — three non-alcoholic drinks with three snacks — which works for toddlers through tweens. Food follows the week: cheese platters Wednesday–Thursday 10:00–16:00 and pizzas Friday–Sunday 10:00–16:00. The estate's lawned gardens, described on its wedding and venue pages, give kids room to stretch their legs between slices. More on kids' pairings in grape juice tastings for kids, and other pizza stops in pizza at wine farms with kids.
Good to know: last tastings and kitchen orders are at 16:00, so don't arrive late after the long drive. No play area is published — pack a ball or a small outdoor game instead. Montpellier is largely a wedding and events venue, so check its events calendar before you set off. If your plan depends on pizza, go Friday to Sunday; midweek is platters only.
Farm with a limited family offer
Tulbagh Winery
Area: Tulbagh · about 110 min from Cape Town without traffic · tulbaghwine.co.za
A kiddies tasting of flavoured grape juice with a treat (R50 per child) served alongside the adult tasting. It's a simple, honest way to include children in a short cellar visit in town, and it pairs easily with a stroll along Church Street.
Good to know: this is an in-town cellar tasting room. There is no play area, lawn or food published, so plan lunch and run-around time elsewhere. Hours are Monday–Friday 09:00–17:00 and Saturday/public holidays 09:00–13:00; closed Sunday. Don't oversell it to the kids as a farm outing — it's a juice-and-treat stop, not a play afternoon.
Sample Tulbagh family day
With only two family-ready wine stops, plan the day around the village and one longer lunch:
1. Morning: drive out early (about 108–110 min from Cape Town without traffic) and stretch your legs on the Church Street heritage walk. Pop into the Tourism Information Centre for maps and trail advice. 2. Late morning: short tasting at Tulbagh Winery with the R50 kiddies juice tasting (Saturdays it closes at 13:00), or the Oude Kerk Volksmuseum complex with school-age kids. 3. Lunch: Montpellier de Tulbagh for pizzas (Friday–Sunday) and the Kiddies Pairing, with time on the lawns. Kitchen orders close at 16:00. 4. Afternoon: head home before the kids hit the wall, or break the drive at a Wellington farm or Playrock in Paarl.
One or two wine stops is plenty here. Sort a sober driver for the long return trip — see Uber vs self-drive with kids. Wine tasting is for over-18s only — SA alcohol age etiquette.

Practical tips
- Check Montpellier's events calendar — weddings and functions can change what's available on the day.
- Plan around Sundays. Tulbagh Winery is closed; Montpellier's pizzas run Friday–Sunday. Friday or Saturday covers both.
- Don't invent facilities. Neither farm publishes a play area; only Montpellier serves meals. Pack snacks, a ball and water (what to pack).
- Heat and distance: Tulbagh valley summers get hot, and it's a long drive. Hats, sunscreen and car breaks matter (safety tips).
- Match the day to your kids' ages with choose an age-appropriate wine farm.
More regions
Tulbagh is a scenic add-on, not a substitute for the core Winelands. For playgrounds, kids' menus and grape-juice pairings at scale, use Stellenbosch, Paarl and Wellington. Theme lists: play areas, grape juice tastings, pizza.
Hours, prices and kids’ facilities change. Check the farm’s website before you drive.
