Family-Friendly Wine Farms in Constantia
9 family friendly wine farms in Constantia: Groot Constantia kids picnics, Uitsig playground and Bike Park, kids menus, age rules and Kirstenbosch.
Looking for family friendly wine farms in Constantia? This is the valley you reach before the kids finish their padkos: every farm here is about 17 to 25 minutes from Cape Town without traffic. Two estates carry a family day on their own — Groot Constantia, with kids menus at both restaurants, kids picnic baskets, a duck pond and the heritage Visitors Route, and Constantia Uitsig, with an enclosed playground beside Blockhouse Kitchen and a Bike Park where toddlers can wobble around on balance bikes. This guide covers 9 farms (3 with a fuller family offer, 6 with a limited one), verified against official sources in October 2026.
Constantia is smaller and more polished than Stellenbosch, and several estates have fine-dining restaurants with age limits. Know the rules before you go and you'll avoid a tearful lunch.
How we chose these farms
In October 2026 we checked every Constantia farm against its official website, plus visitor guides where needed. We looked at play areas, kids menus, picnics, animals, food, lawns, access and age rules.
- Fuller family offer (3): Groot Constantia, Constantia Uitsig and Steenberg Vineyards: at least one dedicated kids' feature, such as a children's menu, a playground or kids picnic baskets, plus space to move.
- Limited family offer (6): Buitenverwachting, Silvermist, Beau Constantia, Constantia Glen, Constantia Royale and High Constantia. Children are welcome in at least part of the estate, but there's no full kids' setup. We describe exactly what's there.
- Not listed: Klein Constantia's official pages say it's a working farm and "the environment is not suitable for children", so treat it as an adults-only outing. Ambeloui opens to visitors only for events, and its official Harvest Festival post says children under 13 are not allowed, so we don't recommend it for families either. One other estate is left out because we couldn't confirm a current family visitor offer.
Please check before you go. Menus, prices, picnic seasons and age policies change. See our booking guide and the family wine farms FAQ.
Quick picks by what your kids love
Best for play and bikes
- Constantia Uitsig: enclosed, shaded playground overlooking Blockhouse Kitchen's outdoor tables, plus a 2.8 km Bike Park for riders from about 2–3 on balance bikes. More options in wine farms with bike and pump tracks.
- Silvermist (limited): an on-estate zipline for adventurous older kids. Check the minimum age when you book.
Best for kids menus and picnics
- Groot Constantia: children's menus at Jonkershuis and Simon's, plus pre-booked kids picnic baskets.
- Steenberg: children's menus at Tryn (under-10s) and Bistro Sixteen82 (under-12s).
- Buitenverwachting (limited): summer picnic lawns with estate platters.
Best for ducks, history and dogs
- Groot Constantia: duck pond, Visitors Route museum and VoiceMap audio guide. Simon's even has a dog menu. See dog-friendly family wine farms.
Farms with a fuller family offer
Groot Constantia
Area: Constantia · about 24 min from Cape Town without traffic · grootconstantia.co.za
Constantia's easiest family day. Both Jonkershuis and Simon's offer children's menus, and both do picnic baskets with a kids' option: the Jonkershuis Kids Picnic was R200 and Simon's child picnic basket R295 when we checked. Children can feed the ducks at the pond, run on the sprawling lawns and explore the Visitors Route (museum, cellar tour and VoiceMap audio guide). It works for toddlers through teens and is wheelchair friendly.
Good to know: book picnic baskets 24–48 hours ahead. You can't bring your own food or picnic baskets onto the estate. Simon's has a dog menu and dog-friendly outdoor areas. We couldn't confirm a jungle gym on official pages, so plan around lawns and ducks rather than a playground. Compare picnic rules in our picnic wine farms listicle.
Constantia Uitsig
Area: Constantia · about 22 min from Cape Town without traffic · constantiauitsig.co.za
The valley's best play-and-eat stop. Blockhouse Kitchen has an extensive kids menu from breakfast to dinner, and an enclosed, shaded playground overlooks the outdoor tables. Next door, the Bike Park has 2.8 km of pump tracks and trails, with little ones welcome from about 2–3 on balance bikes. Day rides were R75 an hour or R100 a day when we checked (no booking needed). A visitor guide lists a kids picnic at R205, and the estate also hosts the Heritage Market and kids' parties.
Good to know: no dogs on the estate, and a visitor guide lists it as not wheelchair accessible. Book tables and picnics ahead. More playgrounds in wine farms with play areas.
Steenberg Vineyards
Area: Constantia · about 25 min from Cape Town without traffic · steenbergfarm.com
Steenberg is the pick for families who want a proper sit-down meal. Tryn publishes a children's menu for under-10s (breakfast and lunch) and describes a relaxed, family-friendly garden setting, while Bistro Sixteen82 has a children's menu for under-12s. A garden audio tour makes a gentle wander after lunch.
Good to know: no dedicated playground, so pack a small activity bag for the table. A visitor guide lists Steenberg as wheelchair accessible, but pets aren't allowed. Bookings are recommended for both restaurants and tastings. See more in wine farms with kids menus.
Farms with a limited family offer
These six welcome children in at least part of the estate but have no full kids' setup. They work best as a second stop or for older kids.
Buitenverwachting
Area: Constantia · about 25 min from Cape Town without traffic · buitenverwachting.com
The picnic lawns are open for summer 2026/27, with estate platters on the lawn served first-come (groups of 20+ should book). Bring your own blankets or camp chairs. Coffee BloC does casual breakfasts and lunches, and its take-away deli is handy for lawn snacks.
Good to know: no self-catering, no play area and no kids menu on official pages. Closed Sundays. Table bookings are essential for the tasting room on Saturdays.
Silvermist Vineyards
Area: Constantia · about 18 min from Cape Town without traffic · silvermistestate.co.za
The draw is the zipline run by Cape Town Ziplines on this organic estate, and it's best for adventurous tweens and teens. KODO serves Asian-fusion lunch and dinner Wednesday to Sunday, and its sommelier handles wine tasting.
Good to know: secondary listings give a zipline minimum age of about 6, so check the age rules when you book. No kids menu at KODO. La Colombe, a separate restaurant on the estate, doesn't allow children under 8.
Beau Constantia
Area: Constantia · about 19 min from Cape Town without traffic · beauconstantia.com
Beau Constantia offers deck tastings and an amphitheatre picnic box (serves four) on its tasting menu, which suits a family with older kids.
Good to know: Chefs Warehouse at Beau Constantia has an age limit of at least 10 years for lunch and dinner and no children's menu. The tasting, deck and amphitheatre have no published age ban. No outside food or drink, and booking is highly recommended.
Constantia Glen
Area: Constantia · about 22 min from Cape Town without traffic · constantiaglen.com
Burgers and schnitzel make the menu workable for kids, and outdoor Cobblestones seating has vineyard views.
Good to know: children under 12 aren't allowed in the Glasshouse, Veranda or Cab Franc Pergola. Cobblestones outdoor seating remains open to families, so ask for it when you book. No kids menu and no pets. A directory mentions a play area, but official pages don't, so don't count on it.
Constantia Royale (Nova Zonnestraal)
Area: Constantia · about 17 min from Cape Town without traffic · constantiaroyale.co.za
Walk-in tunnel tastings with Constantiaberg views (Tuesday to Saturday, 11:00–16:00, R100 per person when we checked), plus walk-in olive oil tasting.
Good to know: phone ahead for groups of about six or more. The show-jumping yard is a working equestrian yard, not a petting or pony-ride attraction. No restaurant, play area, kids menu or picnics.
High Constantia Wine Cellar
Area: Constantia · about 20 min from Cape Town without traffic · highconstantia.co.za
An intimate patio tasting overlooking the estate garden and dam (R160 for five wines when we checked). Fine for a short, calm stop with older kids.
Good to know: no restaurant at the tasting room, and no kids menu, play area, picnics or juice tasting. Closed Sundays; book for groups of more than six.
Sample half-day and full-day plans
Half-day with toddlers
1. Constantia Uitsig: early lunch beside the playground, then a balance-bike loop. Or Groot Constantia: ducks, then a pre-booked kids picnic basket. 2. Home before nap time. With drives this short, one farm is plenty.
Full day with primary-school kids
1. Morning: Kirstenbosch's Boomslang walkway or World of Birds in Hout Bay. 2. Lunch: Groot Constantia picnic or Simon's kids menu, then the Visitors Route and VoiceMap audio tour. 3. Afternoon: Bike Park at Constantia Uitsig, or a summer blanket on Buitenverwachting's lawns (not Sundays). 4. Stick to two wine stops and sort a sober driver. See Uber vs self-drive with kids.
Day with tweens and teens
Silvermist's zipline (confirm age rules), lunch at Steenberg or Groot Constantia, then an amphitheatre picnic box at Beau Constantia. Alcohol tasting is for over-18s only. See SA alcohol age and etiquette.

Practical tips for Constantia with kids
- Book ahead: Groot Constantia picnic baskets (24–48 hours), Blockhouse Kitchen and Steenberg tables, the Silvermist zipline and Beau Constantia tastings. See our booking guide.
- Know the age rules: Chefs Warehouse at Beau Constantia is 10+, Constantia Glen keeps under-12s to Cobblestones, and La Colombe at Silvermist is 8+. Ambeloui's Harvest Festival doesn't allow under-13s, and Klein Constantia says its farm isn't suitable for children.
- Check closed days: Buitenverwachting and High Constantia are closed on Sundays, Constantia Royale tunnel tastings run Tuesday to Saturday, and KODO opens Wednesday to Sunday.
- Dogs and prams: dogs are welcome in Simon's outdoor areas at Groot Constantia but not at Uitsig, Steenberg or Constantia Glen. Groot Constantia is wheelchair accessible and Steenberg is listed as accessible; Uitsig and Beau Constantia are listed as not accessible.
- More help: age-appropriate farms, what to pack, safety tips, wine tasting with kids and the family wine farms FAQ.
Theme deep-dives: play areas, picnics, kids menus and bike and pump tracks.
