Tokara Wine Estate is a wine farm in Stellenbosch, Western Cape. About 46 km from Cape Town.
Tokara crowns the upper slopes of the Simonsberg on Helshoogte Pass, where vineyards and olive groves overlook Table Mountain and False Bay. This family-owned Stellenbosch wine estate combines serious Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc with olive oil, contemporary dining, art, and sculpture gardens—making it one of the most complete day-out destinations on the Stellenbosch wine route. Whether you arrive for a focused tasting flight or an unhurried afternoon of food, views, and sculpture, Tokara delivers the sense of place that defines Helshoogte mountain wine.
Tokara’s story began in the mid-1990s when the founders planted their first Cabernet Sauvignon with the ambition of producing world-class wine from a uniquely elevated Helshoogte site. Even then, the vision was clear: great wine should transport you—it should taste of mountain air, granite soils, and meticulous hand work in vineyard and cellar. The name Tokara is a blend of the founders’ children’s names, Thomas and Kara—a personal origin that still defines the estate’s family character and hospitality tone.
Over more than two decades, Tokara has built ranges that escalate from multi-site Premium Collection wines to single-vineyard Reserve bottles and the iconic Director’s Reserve blends drawn from the most expressive parcels. Parallel to the vineyards, Anne-Marie Ferreira established Tuscan olive varieties across the property. Today a boutique olive mill adjacent to the Delicatessen produces cold-pressed Extra Virgin Olive Oil on a state-of-the-art Italian press—linking Mediterranean tradition with Cape Helshoogte terroir and giving visitors a second agricultural narrative alongside the vines.
Nestled on the upper slopes of the Simonsberg, Tokara’s climate, geography, and soils combine to ripen Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc of remarkable purity. Elevation and exposure temper summer heat; views stretch across Stellenbosch toward False Bay, reminding visitors how maritime influence shapes this corner of the Cape. Cooler nights preserve acidity in whites and aromatic lift in reds, while daytime sunshine builds ripe, dark-fruit concentration in Cabernet.
Grapes are hand-picked and gently transported to a modern cellar where skilled winemakers focus on sense of place rather than heavy manipulation. The estate’s position on Helshoogte Pass places it within easy reach of Stellenbosch town yet distinctly above the valley floor—cooler nights, dramatic light, and a landscape of olive trees, vines, and mountain rock that feels both Mediterranean and unmistakably South African. Walking between olive grove and vineyard after a tasting is one of the simplest ways to understand why Helshoogte wines taste the way they do.
Tokara concentrates on two of the world’s great varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. Three tiers structure the offering for both newcomers and collectors:
Popular bottlings include estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Reserve Cabernet, and Director’s Reserve Red. Olive oil tastings alongside wine flights underscore Tokara’s dual agricultural identity—fruit oil and grape wine sharing the same Helshoogte slopes. Ask tasting-room ambassadors about harvest timing for olives versus grapes; the seasonal rhythm of the farm becomes part of the story in the glass and on the bread.
A day at Tokara can unfold across several experiences. Book a tasting in the sophisticated Wine Tasting Lounge with wine ambassadors who explain vineyard and cellar practice, from hand harvesting to how Reserve parcels are chosen. For fine dining, Tokara Restaurant under Chef Carolize Coetzee serves contemporary cuisine inspired by local countryside and farm produce, paired with estate wines and sweeping views over Stellenbosch and False Bay—a feast for the senses that rewards lingering.
The child-friendly Tokara Delicatessen offers seasonal bistro fare, pizzas, coffee, and gourmet products to take home, including olive oil. Between meals, stroll the picturesque sculpture garden, explore the curated art gallery at the winery, and walk gently between olive groves and vineyards. Families appreciate the playground near the deli; couples often prefer a quiet garden circuit before Director’s Reserve. Arrive early so you have time to see it all without rushing—Tokara is designed as a full half-day, not a ten-minute pour.
Tokara has publicly committed to meaningful greenhouse-gas reductions, including absolute scope 1 and 2 emissions cuts by 2035 from a recent base year, alongside measurement and reduction of scope 3 emissions. For environmentally conscious travellers on the Stellenbosch wine route, that transparency complements the estate’s agricultural dualism of vines and olives on shared mountain land.
Tokara sits on Helshoogte Pass above Stellenbosch—follow R310 signage toward Franschhoek. Book restaurant tables and structured tastings in advance, especially weekends and December–January. The Delicatessen is more walk-in friendly for informal meals. Wear comfortable shoes for garden and olive-grove walks; bring a light jacket for breezy mountain afternoons. Combine Tokara with neighbouring Helshoogte estates such as Thelema or Banghoek properties for a mountain-focused Stellenbosch wine route itinerary. Check current hours, tasting menus, and sustainability updates via the official Tokara website before you travel.

Tokara works well for families who head to the Delicatessen: an impressive outdoor jungle-gym play area with running space keeps toddlers and tweens busy while parents enjoy deli and bistro-style food. The official deli page confirms a child-friendly outdoor play area and a menu for the young and young-at-heart. Casual outdoor space and lawns make it a comfortable Stellenbosch lunch stop. Keep the separate fine-dining Tokara Restaurant for adults — it is more formal and not the family play venue. A sculpture garden walk is also listed among activities.
