Casa Mori: Italian Agriturismo in the Stellenbosch Winelands

Casa Mori is a boutique Italian-style agriturismo on a small holding outside Stellenbosch in the Devonvale / Devon Valley area. Owned and hosted by Eugene and Marilyn Mori, with family support from their daughter Yolanda, the property blends Tuscan farmhouse warmth with Cape Winelands views — Table Mountain on the horizon, Devonvale's golf estate below, olive groves and vineyards at the door. Guests come for bed-and-breakfast lodging, estate olive oil, Italian-leaning wine and the kind of hospitality that feels like staying with family rather than checking into a hotel. The official home of the estate is casamori.co.za, where rooms, contacts and the family story are kept up to date.

From Lucca and Johannesburg to Devonvale

The Mori–Moni story is woven into South African Italian food culture. In the late 1800s the Moni family left Lucca, Italy, for the Johannesburg goldfields and built a grocery trade that grew into Fatti's & Monis, South Africa's renowned pasta manufacturer. Valentino Mori arrived to work with Luigi Fatti; his son Bruno Mori became a significant figure in the local wine trade, later marrying Bianca Moni. After wartime service, Bruno's path merged with Monis Wineries in 1952, where he carried technical and financial responsibility for many years.

Eugene Mori, son of Bruno and Bianca, and his wife Marilyn bought their Devonvale smallholding in 1995 with a clear goal: create an Italian-style agriturismo where guests could lodge and eat food grown from the land. They planted hundreds of olive trees (around three hundred) and roughly two hectares of vineyards to produce olive oil and Italian-style wine. That vision still defines Casa Mori today — five B&B rooms, olive oil, wine and pasta offered as part of an authentic farm stay experience. Staying here is a chance to taste how an immigrant wine-and-pasta lineage settled into Stellenbosch soil without losing its Italian heart.

Accommodation with Winelands views

The Tuscan-inspired farmhouse sits about 15 kilometres from Stellenbosch town. Five bedrooms accommodate up to ten guests. Rooms are named for family members and combine antique and contemporary furnishings:

  • Bianca Room — ground level, terrace access, Table Mountain and Bottelary / Devonvale views; twin beds convertible to king; ensuite bath and shower
  • Bruno Room — matching ground-level terrace suite with king bed; ideal beside Bianca for families
  • Valentina Room — upper floor with dual balconies toward Simonsberg and Table Mountain; extra-length king and spa bath
  • Molly Room — separate ground-level unit with pool-deck access, queen bed, air conditioning
  • Alexander Room — upper floor balcony suite with king bed and open ensuite

A swimming pool and landscaped grounds invite slow afternoons after wine-route days. Breakfasts prepared by Marilyn are a recurring highlight in guest feedback — fresh, personal and served with genuine care. Many visitors mention the views as much as the rooms: morning light on Table Mountain, evening quiet over the golf estate and olive silver in the wind.

Wine, olives and the agriturismo table

Casa Mori's plantings support a boutique circle of produce: olive cultivars in the Italian tradition (including varieties such as Leccino and Frantoio noted in estate descriptions), vineyards that have included Sangiovese alongside other reds and whites suited to an Italian–Stellenbosch crossover, and pasta that nods to the family's Fatti's & Monis heritage. Guests can taste and purchase olive oil and wine connected to the farm, deepening the sense that lodging, landscape and table belong together.

The estate also attracts film and photo shoots drawn to Tuscan stone architecture and panoramic Devon Valley light — another thread in how a small Stellenbosch holding sustains a creative rural lifestyle. Whether you are booking a romantic weekend or a multi-room family gathering, the agriturismo format encourages shared meals, conversation and a slower Winelands rhythm than town hotels allow.

Who should book Casa Mori

Casa Mori is ideal if you want:

  • A family-hosted B&B rather than an anonymous hotel
  • Italian–South African hospitality rooted in a real immigrant wine and pasta lineage
  • Views of Table Mountain, vineyards and Devonvale Golf Estate
  • On-site olive oil and wine to taste and take home
  • A quiet base roughly 15 km from Stellenbosch, handy for valley tastings and town dinners

It is less a high-volume cellar-door tourist farm and more a home that opens its doors. Contact Yolanda Truter for general enquiries (+27 82 457 7783, info@casamori.co.za), Marilyn Mori for accommodation (+27 83 229 1577), and Eugene Mori for wine and olive oil (+27 83 620 0016). Making the most of a stay

Use Casa Mori as a calm night base while you explore Stellenbosch and surrounds by day. Swim after tastings, watch the mountain light change over Bottelary, and ask your hosts about current oil and wine releases. Bring curiosity about Italian Cape heritage — the Moni and Mori names are part of how South Africans came to eat pasta and drink local wine with European memory. Pack lightly but leave space for bottles and tins of oil; farm produce is half the reason to stay. For travellers searching "Casa Mori Stellenbosch," "Devon Valley agriturismo," or "Italian B&B Winelands," this small Devonvale estate is the genuine article: olive trees, vines, five rooms and a family still living the story they planted in 1995.

Casa Mori is an Italian-style agriturismo B&B set among vineyards and olive groves, about 36 minutes from Cape Town (14 minutes from Stellenbosch town) without traffic. It's a place to stay, not a family day out. There are just five B&B rooms, and the official site describes the adjacent ground-floor Bruno and Bianca rooms as perfect for families who want to stay close together. Overnight guests also get a swimming pool and the farm setting, and the estate's own wine and olive oil are for guests. We found no public walk-in tasting room, no kids menu and no play area, so don't drive out expecting a lunch stop with a jungle gym. It suits families with toddlers or tweens who want a quiet base for exploring the Winelands. Book ahead, ask which rooms suit your family size, and supervise children at the pool.
