Beau Constantia: High-altitude Constantia Nek boutique

Beau Constantia is a boutique wine farm at the top of Constantia Nek, looking out toward False Bay with some of the steepest planted slopes on the Cape wine map. Vineyards climb toward roughly 350–362 m above sea level on the Vlakkenberg foothills—granite-derived soils, cool Atlantic influence, and panoramic views across Stellenbosch and Helderberg ranges. For visitors building a Constantia Wine Route day from Cape Town, it is a natural stop: glass-encased tasting space, vineyard Deck, amphitheatre vibes, and Chefs Warehouse Beau Constantia as a separate fine-dining neighbour on the same property.

Booking is highly recommended. Parking is limited; the estate strongly recommends Uber or a taxi for responsible drinking.

History & people: fire, terraces, and Pas de Nom

After fires in 2000 cleared pine and fynbos, Pierre and Cecily du Preez bought the roughly 22-hectare property in 2002 and began terracing for vines. First plantings followed in 2003 with guidance from farm manager Oom Japie Bronn, who came out of retirement to help establish the high slopes. Today about 11.47 hectares are under vine—Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Shiraz, Petit Verdot, and Pinot Noir among them.

The lifestyle Pas de Nom (“no name”) range honours Oom Japie’s humility: he did not want a wine named after him, so the bearded label became the tribute. He passed away in November 2015 before seeing the finished label, but he saw the first fruit in bottle. Winemaker Megan van der Merwe—viticulturist first, minimal-intervention cellar second—has led the estate since the 2019 vintage after earlier work at Constantia Glen and harvests abroad.

Signature wines: Family range and Pas de Nom

Two ranges structure the offer:

Pas de Nom — approachable everyday wines: White (Sauvignon Blanc & Sémillon), Creative Batch (Cape white blend), Pink, Constantia Red, and Pas de Nom MCC (Chardonnay–Pinot Noir). Shop bottle prices on the live homepage (e.g. White and Pink around the mid-R100s; MCC listed higher)—always reconfirm online.

Family / Beau Constantia range — premium estate wines named for the owners’ circle, including Karin (Cabernet Franc), Lucca (Merlot–Cabernet Franc), Aidan, Cecily (Viognier), Pierre (Sauvignon Blanc–Sémillon), and Stella (Syrah / Syrah–Viognier storytelling on estate pages). Official estate copy highlights Stella’s strong showing at the 2025 International Wine Challenge (including South African Syrah and Red Wine trophy language on the experience page)—cite the estate’s own awards page rather than tertiary round-ups when booking narratives.

Verified tasting offer: Pas de Nom and Family flights

Official homepage hours for wine tasting: Monday–Sunday 11h00–18h00; last tastings commence 90 minutes before closing. Closed Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day. Maximum 12 guests on tasting reservations unless arranged by email to reservations@beauconstantia.com. Walk-ins accepted first come, first served. No vineyard or cellar tours. The Deck’s walk-in side is glass and bottle only—formal tastings are not offered on that walk-in side. External food and drink are not allowed.

Published tasting menus mix sources. The estate experience HTML has listed Pas de Nom around R110 and Family around R150 per person (four wines each). Meta research also saw Dineplan figures around R130 / R200 (May 2026 venue check) and an April 2026 farm PDF at R150 for Pas de Nom. Confirm the live price when you book—do not rely on a single cached figure. Flights are typically 90-minute sittings in the tasting room / booked Deck area.

Chefs Warehouse–crafted platters on estate menus have included a Tasting Room Platter (R420), Cheese Only (R350), and Harvest Platter/Board (R350). Deck picnic and graze boxes appear on Dineplan-style menus in the mid-to-high R500s for sharing formats—again, confirm at booking.

Chefs Warehouse Beau Constantia (separate entity)

The restaurant is not the tasting room. Lunch Monday–Sunday 12h00–14h00 (last orders 14h30); dinner Monday–Saturday 18h30–20h00 (last orders 20h30); closed Sunday dinner and on Christmas (25–26 Dec), New Year’s Day, and Easter Sunday. Children policy: at least 10 years old; no children’s menu. Book via the restaurant channel (cw@beauconstantia.com / Dineplan), not the tasting reservations inbox, to avoid delays. Larger groups and Protea Pod private dining are arranged by email.

Constantia wine-route context

Constantia Nek sits at the saddle between Constantia valley and Hout Bay / Atlantic seaboard—ideal for a route that also includes Constantia Glen, Eagles’ Nest’s wines (cellar door closed—shop elsewhere), and deeper valley stops such as Buitenverwachting or Klein Constantia. Beau Constantia’s altitude and views make it a strong “sense of place” stop even without a cellar walkthrough.

Visiting with kids

Deck and amphitheatre picnic boxes suit older kids, but Chefs Warehouse bars under-10s and has no children’s menu.

Possible with kids. About 19 min from Cape Town. Suited to tweens, teens.

PicnicLawns

  • amphitheatre picnic boxes

Beau Constantia is a limited family stop, about 19 min from Cape Town without traffic, and it's best for tweens and teens. The key rule is that Chefs Warehouse at Beau Constantia has an age limit of at least 10 years for lunch and dinner and no children's menu, so the restaurant won't work with younger kids. The wine tasting, deck and amphitheatre have no published age ban, and an amphitheatre picnic box (serves four) is on the tasting menu, a nice way for an older family to share the views. Outside food and drink aren't allowed. Tastings take a maximum of 12 people, so booking is highly recommended. A visitor guide lists the estate as not dog-friendly and not wheelchair accessible, so it's not ideal for prams or toddlers.

Before you go

  • Book ahead, especially on weekends and in school holidays.
  • Dogs are not welcome.
  • Not a comfortable stop with a pram.
Can under-10s eat at Chefs Warehouse?

No. Chefs Warehouse has an age limit of at least 10 years for lunch and dinner, and there's no children's menu.

Is there a picnic option?

Yes. An amphitheatre picnic box (serves four) is on the tasting menu. Outside food and drink aren't allowed.

Do we need to book?

Booking is highly recommended. Tastings take a maximum of 12 people.
