Wedding Guest Transport and Shuttles in the Cape Winelands

How to get guests to and from a Winelands wedding safely: shuttles, e-hailing limits, drive times, late-night returns and what to book.

Last checked: 5 October 2026

Getting guests to a wine farm is easy. Getting them home safely at midnight, after a day of estate wine, takes planning. Winelands venues are often on rural roads, some distance from where guests are staying. A good transport plan protects your guests, keeps your timeline on track and stops anyone feeling they have to drive. This guide covers the options, realistic drive times, pick-up planning and what to check before you book an operator.

How we checked this

Drink-driving limits come from the National Road Traffic Act as published by Arrive Alive. Operating licence and professional driving permit rules come from the National Land Transport Act and the Western Cape Government. Drive times are free-flow estimates from the OSRM route planner using OpenStreetMap data. We don't name or price transport operators. Links are under Sources.

Why transport matters

  • Drink-driving limits are low. Under section 65 of the National Road Traffic Act, the limit is 0.05 g of alcohol per 100 ml of blood (0.24 mg per 1,000 ml of breath) for ordinary drivers, and 0.02 g per 100 ml for professional drivers. Arrive Alive says research indicates that half of the people who die on South African roads have a blood alcohol concentration above 0.05 g per 100 ml.
  • The penalties are serious. Arrive Alive notes that a conviction leads to a licence suspension of at least six months for a first offence.
  • Rural roads are different at night. Farm access roads can be gravel, unlit and narrow, and guests who don't know the area may struggle to find their way back.
  • Phones may not help. Signal can be patchy on some farms, and it's not guaranteed that an e-hailing driver will accept a late-night trip from a rural venue.

The simplest rule: nobody who has been drinking should need to drive.

Shuttle vs e-hailing vs self-drive

OptionWorks well forWatch out for
Booked shuttle or coachMost weddings; guests staying in one or two townsFixed times; you pay whether guests use it or not
E-hailing or taxisSmall groups; venues close to townAvailability and surge pricing late at night; patchy signal
Self-driveSober drivers; guests staying on siteDrink-driving risk; parking; dark farm roads
On-site accommodationRemoving the return trip altogetherLimited rooms; cost

Most couples mix these: a shuttle loop for the bulk of guests, rooms on site for family and the bridal party, and a few taxi numbers for stragglers. If you'd rather keep everyone close, see wine farm wedding venues with accommodation.

Drive times from Cape Town and the airport

These are free-flow estimates from the OSRM route planner (OpenStreetMap data) to each town centre, not to a specific farm. They don't include traffic, roadworks, stops, gravel access roads or loading time. Real journeys are usually longer, especially at peak times.

If most guests are staying in Cape Town, a venue closer to the city cuts travel time and cost. Our guide to wine farm wedding venues near Cape Town is a good place to start.

Planning pick-up points and late-night returns

1. Map where guests are staying. Ask for accommodation on the RSVP. One or two central pick-up points (a hotel or town centre) work better than door-to-door collections. 2. Set a departure time with a buffer. Leave time for loading and late arrivals, then add the realistic drive time. 3. Plan at least two return trips. An early run, often after the first dance, suits older guests and families. A final run should match the venue's curfew, when guests must be off the property, not when the music stops. 4. Have a named transport contact on the night. Not the couple. Give guests their number. 5. Communicate the schedule clearly. Put pick-up points and times on the invitation or wedding website, and announce the last shuttle during the evening. 6. Count seats properly. Include suppliers who need lifts, and assume a few guests will change their plans.

For large guest lists, check that coaches can reach the venue's drop-off point and turn around. Our large wedding venues in the Western Cape guide covers venues built for bigger numbers.

What to ask a transport operator

You don't need to take an operator's word for it. Ask to see documents.

Licensing

  • Operating licence. Under section 50 of the National Land Transport Act, nobody may operate a road-based public transport service without an operating licence (or permit) for the vehicle. The Western Cape Government says anyone transporting passengers for payment must have a public operating licence, must display it when a traffic officer asks, and must fix a distinguishing mark to the vehicle. Ask to see the licence for each vehicle you'll use.
  • Professional driving permit (PrDP). The Western Cape Government says drivers need a PrDP for vehicles used to transport people for payment, any bus, and vehicles carrying 12 or more people including the driver. Ask whether every driver holds one.
  • Event-only licences. The Western Cape also issues temporary operating licences for special events. If an operator says they'll use one, ask to see it.

Insurance and safety

  • Do you have passenger liability and public liability insurance? Can you send proof?
  • How old are the vehicles, and when were they last serviced and roadworthy-tested?
  • What's your policy on driver alcohol use? (The legal limit for professional drivers is lower than for other drivers.)
  • What happens if a vehicle breaks down? Is there a backup vehicle?
  • Have your drivers been to our venue before? Will they do a recce?

The booking

  • What does the quote include (waiting time, mileage, late-night surcharges, VAT)?
  • How long will the driver wait, and what does extra waiting cost?
  • What's the cancellation policy?
  • Can you provide a written run sheet with times, pick-up points and driver contact numbers?

We don't publish shuttle prices, because they depend on vehicle size, distance, waiting time and season. Get two or three written quotes.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need to provide transport for wedding guests?

You don't have to, but if guests are drinking and the venue is rural, a shuttle is the safest way to get them home. Under South African law, drivers must stay under 0.05 g of alcohol per 100 ml of blood.

Can guests use Uber or Bolt from a wine farm?

Sometimes, but availability late at night at rural venues isn't guaranteed and signal can be patchy. Treat e-hailing as a backup, not the plan.

How do I check a shuttle company is legitimate?

Ask to see the operating licence for each vehicle, confirm drivers hold professional driving permits, and ask for proof of insurance. The Western Cape Government says operators must display their licence when asked by a traffic officer.

How many return shuttles should we book?

Usually at least two: an earlier run for guests who want to leave after dinner or the first dance, and a final run timed to the venue's curfew.

How long does it take to drive from Cape Town to the Winelands?

Free-flow estimates from OSRM put Stellenbosch at about 42 minutes and Franschhoek at about 56 minutes from Cape Town's city centre. Traffic and farm roads add time. More answers are in our wine farm wedding FAQ.
