Private Wine Tours from Cape Town

Private driver-guided Winelands days — flexibility, inclusions and who they suit.

Last checked: 6 October 2026

A private wine tour Cape Town day means one vehicle, one driver-guide and one group: yours. You choose the pace, you can swap a stop when someone falls in love with a Chenin, and nobody waits for strangers at the bus. This guide compares private, guide-led Winelands days that collect you from Cape Town (and a couple that start in Stellenbosch), with prices copied as each operator publishes them.

How we checked this

Every operator below was checked on its own website on 6 October 2026. Prices are quoted exactly as published, with the year, the basis (per person or per group) and whether tasting fees are included. Where a price has no year, we say so. Third-party booking sites are only mentioned as clearly labelled secondary links.

How private tours are priced (read this first)

Private tours in the Cape are sold in three different ways, and mixing them up is the fastest way to misjudge value:

1. Per person on a sliding scale. The "from" price is usually the rate for a large group. A couple or a solo traveller pays a much higher per-person rate. Always look for the rate for your group size. 2. Per group (or per vehicle). One total for the car and guide, whether you are one or three people. You then divide it yourself. 3. Tastings included or not. Some operators fold every tasting, pairing and cellar entry into the price; others charge for the guide and vehicle only, and you pay tasting fees at each farm.

We never compare a per-group total with a per-person price here. When you shortlist, work out "what will our group pay in total, tastings included".

Wine in the Cape — sliding scale with pairings built in

Best for: couples and families who want everything included and a guide who chooses estates to suit their taste.

Wine in the Cape's Full-Day Private Wine Tour covers Stellenbosch, or Franschhoek and Stellenbosch together, with your own guide and air-conditioned vehicle. Three estates are matched to your palate, and the price includes tastings and pairings at all three, cheese and chocolate pairings, and cellar and vineyard tours. Pickup is around 09:00 from Cape Town hotels, with drop-off around 17:30. Lunch is for your own account unless it is part of a package; the team books the estate restaurant for you.

Price (2026, per person, tastings included): 1 guest R8,600; 2 guests R5,500; 3 guests R4,000; 4 guests R3,300; 5 guests R2,900; 6 guests R2,600; 7 or more R2,500. From 1 January 2027 the published scale rises (R9,250 for one guest down to R2,700 for 7+).

The same team runs a Classic Constantia Tour (private, full day, about 09:00 to 17:30) on the same 2026 per-person scale, visiting three or four of Groot Constantia, Klein Constantia, Buitenverwachting and Beau Constantia, with all tastings and pairings included and lunch for your own account. It is the closest wine region to the city, which suits travellers who would rather not spend the day on the N1.

Wine in the Cape also runs private half-days in Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Durbanville; we compare those on our half-day wine tours page.

Wine Flies — a reservationist plans the day around you

Best for: first-timers who want someone else to handle every booking, and groups who like boutique, winemaker-led stops.

Wine Flies' Private Classic Full Day Wine Tour gives you a guide, a driver and a reservationist who picks estates to your taste in Stellenbosch or Franschhoek. A published sample itinerary includes Villiera, Mitre's Edge, Middelvlei, Lovane and Annandale, but the route is tailored to each booking and depends on availability. Pickup is 09:00 from anywhere around Cape Town, drop-off about 17:30. All wine tastings, food pairings, activities and entry fees are included; lunch is not.

Price (2026, per person, tastings included): 1 guest R9,954; 2 R6,289; 3 R4,655; 4 R3,819; 5 R3,325; 6 R3,059; 7 R2,945; 8 or more R2,850.

Wine Flies' private half-day is covered on our half-day wine tours page.

Note that Annandale, which appears in the sample itinerary, is closed on Sundays, so a Sunday private day will be planned around that.

Wine Tours South Africa — a pre-planned private itinerary

Best for: groups who like the privacy of their own vehicle but don't want to design the day from scratch.

Wine Tours South Africa (winetour.co.za) sells Scheduled Private Tours: a private vehicle on a preplanned route. The Stellenbosch & Franschhoek version visits prestige estates — Lanzerac, Delaire Graff, Tokara and Haute Cabrière — with all tastings, pairings and entries included (chocolate and wine, cheese, a cellar experience and Cap Classique sabrage). Lunch is for your own account, and a table at Lanzerac, Delaire Graff or Tokara needs a deposit. Pickup is 10:00 from Cape Town or Stellenbosch accommodation, back around 18:30, in a Hyundai Staria or Quantum.

The Cape Town & Constantia version visits Constantia Glen, Buitenverwachting and Steenberg, with platters, a cellar experience and sabrage included. You may swap one estate within the region.

Price (per person, tastings included, no year shown on the page — confirm the current price): 1 guest on request; 2 guests R5,400; 3 to 4 guests R4,400; 5 to 6 guests R3,900; 7 to 8 guests R3,400; 9 or more R2,900. A 50% deposit secures the booking, with free cancellation or rescheduling up to 7 days before.

Wine Tours Cape Town — set routes built around Fairview's cheese pairing

Best for: cheese lovers, and anyone who wants a published price that holds well into next year.

Not to be confused with Wine Tours South Africa above, Wine Tours Cape Town (winetourscapetown.com) sells private days on set routes and says it matches each tour with one of its vetted, insured local partner operators. Two private routes stand out:

  • Cape Winelands Private Wine Tour: Fairview (master cheese and wine pairing), Anthonij Rupert (flagship tasting) and Waterford (wine and chocolate, including its Jem blend), with a lunch stop at Tokara for your own account. Depart 09:30, back about 18:00. 2026, per person, tastings included, valid to 31 July 2027: from Cape Town 2 guests R5,140; 3 R3,870; 4 R3,570; 5 R3,240; 6 R2,950. Departures from Stellenbosch are cheaper, from R4,560 per person for 2 down to R2,650 per person for 6.
  • Private Wine Tour from Cape Town (Master Cheese & Wine Pairing): a cellar tour with Chardonnay and Cap Classique at Jordan, a tutored cheese pairing at Fairview with lunch (main meal and a drink) at the Goatshed, then a tasting at Rainbow's End. About 09:00 to 18:00. 2026, per person, tastings and lunch included, valid to 31 July 2027: 2 guests R5,640; 3 R4,360; 4 R4,070; 5 R3,740; 6 R3,440.

Children are welcome on the private tours with a parent or guardian. A German-speaking guide costs R1,150 extra (2026).

Vine Hopper private wine tour — the Stellenbosch specialists

Best for: guests staying in Stellenbosch, and anyone who wants a one-way drop (for example Cape Town to Franschhoek).

Better known for its hop-on shuttle, Vine Hopper (operated with Adventureshop Stellenbosch) also runs a tailor-made Private Wine Tour with a registered guide across Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, collecting from Stellenbosch guesthouses or Cape Town accommodation. It runs about 7.5 hours with four premier wine tastings included (the booking page also mentions pairings across four to five farms plus a cellar tour). Lunch and drinks at lunch are excluded.

Price (2026, per group, tastings included): from R6,100 for 1 to 2 guests on dates up to 30 October 2026, rising to R7,520 for 2 guests on dates from 2 November 2026. Larger groups pay a higher total (for example R9,400 for 4 guests on an early-October date).

Kabura Travel & Tours — airport and Waterfront pickups

Best for: travellers who want to be collected from the V&A Waterfront, the Atlantic Seaboard or straight off a flight.

Kabura (trading as Private Tours Cape Town) sells a Cape Winelands Private Tour to Stellenbosch and Franschhoek: a private driver-guide over Helshoogte Pass, three estates of your choice (or the guide's suggestions), about seven hours, up to 7 guests. Tastings at three estates, water and fuel are included; lunch and extra tastings are not. Free cancellation up to 24 hours.

Price: from R1,739 per person. The page shows no year and doesn't say which group size this applies to, so ask for the rate for your party before you book.

A second product, Private Wine Tour from Cape Town, follows a set route — Jordan (cellar tour), Fairview (master cheese and wine pairing plus lunch at the Goatshed) and Rainbow's End — over about nine hours, with tastings and lunch included. It is priced from US$170 per person (2026), published in US dollars only, so confirm the rand amount and group basis.

Guided private tour or just a driver?

Everything above is guide-led. If you already have your own estate list and only need a sober driver, a driver-only service may suit you better. We cover that separately in non-guided driver Winelands.

Matching an operator to your group

  • Two people, want everything paid upfront: My Wine Tour (flat R2,950 per person, 2026, lunch included) is simple to budget. Wine in the Cape and Wine Flies include tastings but quote higher per-person rates for couples.
  • Three adults with strong opinions: Wine Desk's per-group rate for 1 to 3 guests, plus tasting fees at the door.
  • Large family or friends' group (6+): sliding-scale operators (Wine in the Cape, Wine Flies, Wine Tours South Africa, Wine Tours Cape Town) get much cheaper per person as numbers rise. My Wine Tour takes up to 12.
  • Children in the group: Wine Desk publishes child rates; Wine Tours Cape Town welcomes children on private tours; Wine in the Cape and Wine Flies offer family-specific tours. Ask about car seats.
  • Non-drinkers: My Wine Tour's non-alcoholic variant, or read our non-alcoholic options guide.
  • Mobility needs: none of these operators publishes wheelchair details, so ask directly before paying a deposit. Our accessible wine tours guide has the questions to ask.

Questions to ask before you pay a deposit

1. Is the quote per person or per group, and for exactly how many guests? 2. Are tastings, pairings and cellar entries included, and is lunch? 3. Which estates are planned, and what happens if one is closed that day? 4. Is the price for 2026, or will a 2027 rate apply to our date?

For general booking habits and tipping, see wine tour tipping and booking. For a broader cost picture, wine tour costs.

Planning the rest of the day

Where lunch is for your own account, book a good estate table early — ideas in /restaurants. Staying among the vineyards? See /places-to-stay and ask for a Winelands pickup. Three estates is a comfortable private day; see how many wineries in one day.

FAQs

How much does a private wine tour from Cape Town cost?

It depends on group size and basis. For example, a couple pays R5,500 per person with Wine in the Cape (2026, tastings included), R6,289 per person with Wine Flies (2026, tastings included) or R2,950 per person with My Wine Tour (2026, tastings and lunch included). Wine Desk charges R6,655 per group for 1 to 3 guests (no year shown), but tastings are paid on top.

Are tastings included on private tours?

On most of the tours above, yes: Wine in the Cape, Wine Flies, Wine Tours South Africa, Wine Tours Cape Town, My Wine Tour, Vine Hopper's private tour and Kabura (three estates) include them. Wine Desk Cape Town does not — you pay at each estate.

Can I choose the wine farms?

Yes on tailor-made tours (Wine in the Cape, Wine Flies, Wine Desk, Kabura's Stellenbosch and Franschhoek tour, Vine Hopper's private tour). Wine Tours South Africa's scheduled private tours follow a set route, though you may swap one estate on the Constantia day.

Is a private tour worth it for two people?

It is a splurge for two, but you get full control of the pace and stops. If budget matters more than privacy, a shared wine tour or the Franschhoek Wine Tram costs less per person.

Can we bring our dog on a private wine tour?

None of these operators publishes a dog policy, so ask first. Many wine farms welcome dogs on their own terms; see dog-friendly wine farms in the Western Cape and consider a separate self-planned day with your dog.

Can children come on a private wine tour?

Often yes. Wine Desk publishes child rates (under 5 free, under 16 at 50%), and Wine in the Cape welcomes children and suggests its family tours. Under-18s won't taste wine, so ask about grape juice or other alternatives.
