Non-Guided Driver Service in the Winelands
When a driver-only (non-guided) Winelands day makes sense — you plan estates, they drive.
Last checked: 6 October 2026
A non guided driver Winelands day is the simplest idea in wine touring: you plan the estates, someone sober drives. There's no commentary, no set itinerary and no guide fee folded into the price, only a vehicle, a driver and your own list of cellar doors. It suits people who already know where they want to taste, groups with a winemaker friend to visit, and repeat visitors who'd rather spend the day at three favourite farms than follow a brochure route.
This page explains how driver-only days work, what they usually include and exclude, and which operators in our checks publish a genuine driver-only or transport-only product.
How we checked this
Operator details come from official websites, checked on 6 October 2026. Where an operator quotes on request rather than publishing a price, we say so rather than guess. Prices quoted carry their year, basis and whether tastings are included.
Driver-only versus a guided private tour
| Non-guided driver | Guided private tour | |
|---|---|---|
| Who plans the day | You | The guide or operator |
| Commentary on wines and history | No | Yes |
| Tasting bookings | Usually you (some services book for you) | Operator |
| Tasting fees | Paid at each estate | Often included |
| Typical pricing | Per vehicle, quoted | Per person sliding scale or per group |
| Best for | Confident planners, repeat visitors, larger groups sharing one vehicle | First-timers, celebrations, anyone wanting a hosted day |

Operators offering driver-only or transport-only days
Wine Tours South Africa — Wine Shuttle (per vehicle)
What it is: the clearest driver-only product in our checks. Wine Tours South Africa (winetour.co.za) describes its Wine Shuttle as "a professional transport service & not a guided tour": you hire a vehicle and chauffeur and set your own itinerary.
Vehicle and hours: a Quantum for up to 12 guests, for 10 hours, including 250 km and fuel.
Pickup areas: Cape Town and surrounds, Constantia, Hout Bay, the South Peninsula, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Paarl, Durbanville, Tableview, Blaauwberg and Somerset West.
Price: per vehicle, by email quotation — no published rand figure. Tastings and lunch are not included. A 50% deposit applies, with free cancellation up to 7 days before.
Why it stands out: the large vehicle and long day make it the natural fit for a group of 8 to 12 friends who already know where they want to go.

Wanderer Tours and Travel — chauffeured Constantia half-day (quote)
What it is: a private chauffeur in a Mercedes-Benz for a Constantia half-day of about four to five hours (the sample day runs 10:00 to 15:30), collecting from Cape Town, Atlantic Seaboard and Camps Bay hotels. Wanderer books private tastings at two or three of Groot Constantia, Klein Constantia, Buitenverwachting, Steenberg, Constantia Glen and Beau Constantia, reserves lunch if you'd like it, and offers a WhatsApp concierge.
Price: quoted by route, group size and inclusions — no published price. Tasting fees are paid directly at each estate; lunch is paid at the restaurant.
Why it stands out: it is close to town and easy to pair with Cape Point or Table Mountain the same week. Children and non-drinkers are welcome, and several Constantia estates offer juice pairings.
Tuk Tuk Franschhoek — a private driver on three wheels
What it is: Tuk Tuk Franschhoek's hop-on products are private (never shared) open-air tuk-tuks for up to four guests. You choose your estates from the operator's Franschhoek pool and your driver takes you there. It is a driver-only day in all but name, at a village scale.
Price (2026, per person, transport only — tastings not included): Half Day Hop on Hop off from R350 per person (three estates, about 3.5 hours); Full Day from R470 per person (four estates plus an extra hour). Tastings, meals and drinks are paid at the estates. Pickup is from Franschhoek hotels and guesthouses. Tours run about 10:00 to 19:00 in season (October to April) and 10:00 to 17:00 from May to September.
Estate notes: the pool includes Cape Chamonix, whose lodge was destroyed in January 2026 (check what is open before you choose it), and Mont Rochelle, whose tasting room has been operating temporarily from Miko during construction while its Country Kitchen restaurant is refurbished.

The Tram's Cape Town transfer add-on
What it is: not a driver for the day, but an optional chauffeured return transfer between hotels in Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Paarl, Strand and surrounds and the Wine Tram terminals. You then hop on and off the Tram network by yourself. Book at least 48 hours ahead.
Price: per vehicle, shown in the booking flow (2026) — no public rand figure. The Tram's hop-on ticket itself is R350 per person adult (2026), transport only, with estate tastings of R60 to R260 per person extra.

Vine Hopper — shared transport, your choice of stops
What it is: Stellenbosch's hop-on hop-off shuttle. There's no guide in the tasting room, you choose where to get off, and collection from central Stellenbosch guesthouses or the tourism office is included.
Price: R450 per person (2026), transport only, rising to R470 per person from 2 November 2026 on the online booking page. Tastings are paid at each farm.

What a driver-only day usually includes
- Vehicle, driver and fuel for an agreed number of hours and kilometres.
- Pickup and drop-off at your accommodation.
- Sometimes booking help (Wanderer books tastings and lunch; Wine Tours South Africa's shuttle leaves planning to you).
What it usually excludes
- Tasting fees at every estate.
- Lunch and drinks with lunch.
- Commentary. Your driver may know the roads and the farms well, but this isn't a guided tour, so don't expect a wine lesson.
- Overtime and extra kilometres beyond the agreed package.
- Gratuity for the driver (see wine tour tipping and booking).
How to plan a self-planned wine day with a driver
1. Pick one or two neighbouring areas. Stellenbosch's Simonsberg side, Banhoek and Helshoogte, Franschhoek village, or Constantia each make a sensible day. Hopping between distant valleys burns tasting time. 2. Choose three, maybe four, estates. See how many wineries in one day. 3. Book tastings yourself where estates take bookings, especially at weekends and for seated or pairing tastings. Our how to book wine tastings guide helps. 4. Book lunch at the middle stop. Browse /restaurants for estate restaurants. 5. Send your driver the list in order, with addresses and booking times, at least a day before. 6. Agree the hours and kilometres and what happens if you run late. 7. Budget tasting fees. For a sense of what estates charge, see how much wine tasting costs.
Check closures before you lock in the list
- Vrede en Lust: its Savoye restaurant is closed to the public from 12 October 2026 to 16 May 2027. Plan lunch elsewhere, or use the estate's other public dining and tasting options.
- Mont Rochelle: the Country Kitchen restaurant is being refurbished, and tastings have been running temporarily from Miko during construction.
- Laborie (Paarl): the werf is being rebuilt (October 2026), so confirm what is open for tastings and dining.
- Cape Chamonix (Franschhoek): the lodge was destroyed in January 2026; check which tasting and dining facilities are operating.
- Many estates close on certain weekdays (for example, La Motte on Mondays, Annandale on Sundays and Cavalli on Tuesdays).
Driver-only, guided or hop-on: a quick decision guide
- You know exactly which estates you want, and you're 6+ people: driver-only vehicle hire, priced per vehicle.
- You're two people and want the farms chosen for you: a shared or private guided tour is usually better value and more fun.
- You want flexibility on a budget: a hop-on network — the Tram in Franschhoek or Vine Hopper in Stellenbosch — gives you a no-guide day at a per-person transport price.
- You're staying in Franschhoek village: a private tuk-tuk is driver-only at a small scale.
- You're weighing up a hire car: read wine tour vs self-drive and wine tasting without driving first. A driver removes the drink-driving risk entirely.
Comparing prices fairly
Driver-only services are almost always per vehicle, while hop-on tickets and most guided tours are per person. Never compare those totals directly. Divide the vehicle quote by the number of guests, then add tasting fees for everyone, before you set it beside an all-inclusive per-person tour. For a fuller picture, see wine tour costs.
FAQs
What is a non-guided driver in the Winelands?
A chauffeur and vehicle hired for the day to take you to estates you have chosen. There is no guide commentary, and tasting fees are usually paid by you at each farm.
How much does a driver-only wine day cost?
The operators we checked quote on request. Wine Tours South Africa's Wine Shuttle is priced per vehicle (up to 12 guests, 10 hours, 250 km and fuel included, tastings excluded), and Wanderer quotes by route and group size. For a published per-person transport price, Tuk Tuk Franschhoek's private hop-on starts at R350 per person (2026, transport only), and Vine Hopper's shuttle is R450 per person (2026, rising to R470 per person from 2 November 2026), both transport only with tastings extra.
Are tastings included with a driver?
No. With every driver-only option on this page, you pay tasting fees at the estates.
Will the driver book tastings for me?
It depends on the service. Wanderer books private tastings and lunch for you; Wine Tours South Africa's shuttle is transport only, so book tastings yourself.
Can we bring children or a dog?
Children and non-drinkers are welcome on Wanderer's Constantia day. Ask any driver about car seats. Dog policies aren't published for these vehicles, so ask first, and check each farm's rules in our dog-friendly wine farms in the Western Cape guide.
Is driver-only cheaper than a guided tour?
For a larger group sharing one vehicle, it often is, before tasting fees. For couples, a shared tour or hop-on ticket is usually cheaper per person.
