Budget Wine Tours from Cape Town

Lower-cost Winelands touring — hop-on options and what cheap usually excludes.

Last checked: 6 October 2026

You don't need a big budget for a good Winelands day. The trick is knowing what "cheap" usually leaves out. This guide lists budget wine tours from Cape Town with a dated price of about R1,000 per person or less, including transport between farms. We say clearly whether tastings are included (on most budget tours they aren't), and what you'll need to get to the starting point. Undated prices don't count as budget picks here.

How we checked this

Every price was checked on the operator's official website on 6 October 2026 and copied exactly with year and basis. Where tastings cost extra, we give the published tasting-fee range so you can work out the real cost of the day.

The honest summary

  • The cheapest way to tour is a hop-on ticket. You pay for the transport and buy tastings at each farm.
  • None of the budget picks includes pickup from central Cape Town. They start in Franschhoek, Stellenbosch or Durbanville, so you'll need to get there.
  • The cheapest dated tour from Cape Town with tastings included is never@home's Friday tour at R1,690 per person (2026), with lunch extra. It's above our budget line, but it's good value for what's included.

Durbanville Wine Safari — the lowest ticket price

Distinct trait: the only budget option with a tasting package you can add at booking, and the closest to Cape Town.

Open safari vehicles run two hop-on loops through the Durbanville valley on Cape Town's northern side, alternating by day from Tuesday to Sunday:

Tours start from the Protea Hotel Durbanville in Tyger Valley; hotel transfers aren't part of the base ticket. A host travels with you, and tasting-room seating is guaranteed.

Price: R300 per person (2026), transport and host only. The optional Wine Tasting Package adds R600 (R900 per person in total) and covers one tasting or pairing per estate, up to R200 in value each. Some estates need you to book your own tasting if you're not on the package.

Good to know: children over 3 are welcome and pay the same as adults. A minimum of four paying guests is needed, or the service may cancel with a full refund. It's closed on Mondays, 25 December and 31 December. The vehicles and stairs aren't wheelchair friendly. It's not for bachelor or bachelorette parties.

Franschhoek Wine Tram — the classic hop-on

Distinct trait: five lines and the biggest choice of estates on one ticket.

Choose one line for the day (Red, Blue, Pink, Orange or Green) and hop between the estates on it by open-air tram and bus. It runs daily except 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January; from mid-May to mid-September only certain lines run on weekdays.

Price: R350 per person adult (2026), transport only; children 3–17 R90, under-3s free. Estate tastings cost R60 to R260 per person extra, and Babylonstoren's entrance fee is also extra on the Orange line.

Groups of 16 or more can book the Group Experience: a private open-air bus plus the shared tram to three pre-set estates, at R340 per person (2026), children R90, transport only (tastings R60 to R260 per person extra). Book at least five days ahead.

Getting there from Cape Town: the Tram sells a hotel transfer add-on, priced in the booking flow rather than published. Book it at least 48 hours ahead.

Estate notes for the lines: at Vrede en Lust (Orange and Green lines), the Savoye restaurant is closed to the public from 12 October 2026 to 16 May 2027; Mont Rochelle (Red line) has its tastings temporarily at Miko and its Country Kitchen is being refurbished; Cape Chamonix (Pink line) lost its lodge in January 2026.

Everything else, from line-by-line estates to timetables, is in our Franschhoek Wine Tram guide.

Tuk Tuk Franschhoek — private, but still budget

Distinct trait: a private vehicle for up to four, collected from your Franschhoek accommodation.

You choose three estates (half day) or four estates plus a bonus hour (full day) from a pool of about twenty, including quieter appointment-only farms.

Price: Half Day from R350 per person (2026) and Full Day from R470 per person (2026), transport only; tastings, meals and drinks are paid at the estates (some offer guest discounts).

Good to know: no infants or toddlers on the tuk-tuks. Wheelchair needs are assessed case by case. The estate pool includes Cape Chamonix, where the lodge was destroyed in January 2026, and Mont Rochelle, where tastings are temporarily at Miko and the Country Kitchen is being refurbished.

Vine Hopper — Stellenbosch hop-on

Distinct trait: collection from central Stellenbosch guesthouses, and a route that runs at weekends.

Three routes run on different days. Northern (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) visits Beyerskloof, Simonsig, Delheim, Lievland, Warwick and Remhoogte. Southern (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday) visits Kleine Zalze, Annandale (closed on Sundays), Alto, Peter Falke, Cavalli (closed on Tuesdays) and Blaauwklippen. Eastern (Monday to Friday) visits Lanzerac, Neil Ellis, Le Pommier, Boschendal and Zorgvliet.

Price: R450 per person (2026) for dates up to 30 October 2026, rising to R470 per person for dates from 2 November 2026, transport only. Tasting fees are paid at the farms; the operator's site gives R55 to R120 per person per farm and its booking page R70 to R150. Children up to 12 pay the adult price. A 2-day pass is listed at R800 per person, but that is a 2025 price, so check the current rate when you book. Cape Town pickups are available on request for an extra fee.

What a budget day really costs

Because tastings are extra on every budget pick, here's what the published figures add up to before lunch:

  • Wine Tram: R350 ticket (transport only) plus three tastings at R60 to R260 each comes to roughly R530 to R1,130 per person (2026 prices).
  • Vine Hopper: R450 ticket (transport only; R470 for dates from 2 November 2026) plus four tastings at R55 to R120 each (operator's site) comes to roughly R670 to R930 per person (2026 prices).
  • Durbanville Wine Safari: R900 per person with the tasting package (2026), for three estates.

Add lunch, transport to the start and any wine you buy. More on fees in how much wine tasting costs and wine tour costs.

  • Wine Tours South Africa Full Day Group Tour: R1,690 per person with tastings and lunch included, but no year is shown on the price, so it isn't a dated budget pick. The operator advertises 10% off for website bookings and 15% off for students and South African and African citizens. Wine Tours South Africa

Money-saving tips

  • Share a tasting where the estate allows it, and drink plenty of water.
  • Pack a picnic if the farm allows it, or choose one lunch stop rather than snacking at every farm.
  • Stay locally to avoid transfer costs; see /places-to-stay.
  • Travel midweek when it's quieter, but check which lines and routes run that day.
  • Never drive after tasting. See wine tasting without driving.
