Dog Walks on Wine Farms in the Western Cape

Verified wine-farm walks and trails that welcome leashed dogs — trail names only when sourced.

Last checked: 6 October 2026

Dog walks on wine farms need a published trail or grounds welcome — not an assumption that every vineyard avenue is fair game. Livestock, fynbos restoration and farm roads mean leashes almost always. This page lists estates with clearer walk or grounds language.

How we check this

We only list farms where a farm page, FAQ or other reliable source confirms dogs are welcome, and we say where they may go. Policies change — phone or email ahead. For overnight units see pet-friendly wine farm stays.

Why “grounds welcome” is not the same as a marked trail

Some farms welcome leashed dogs on estate grounds or beside picnic lawns without publishing a named trail. Others sell a hiking permit trail (Van Loveren’s Fish Eagle) or cover walking trails in dog T&Cs (Boschendal). Secondary articles that describe old walking routes — for example Klein Roosboom — are not enough when the official activities page says the walking route is closed for farming. We do not sell closed routes.

Estates with clearer walk or grounds language

Boschendal (Franschhoek)

Leashed dogs welcome across the farm under the dog T&Cs (trails and dining areas). Only Cottage 1685 is a pet stay (small to medium dogs); all other Boschendal stays are no pets.

Dog T&Cs cover walking trails and dining areas for leashed dogs. Overnight pets are only at Cottage 1685 (small to medium dogs); all other Boschendal stays are no pets. Day walks still need the lead and clean-up habits in the T&Cs.

Stanford Hills (Walker Bay)

Pet-friendly stays (R250 per pet (official, Oct 2024)), Casa Cello covered terrace with a pet menu, and estate walking trails. No dogs at concerts/events.

Estate walking trails sit alongside pet-friendly stays and Casa Cello’s terrace. No dogs at concerts or events — schedule walks away from ticketed music days.

Van Loveren (Robertson)

Leashed dogs are welcome on the Fish Eagle trail (hiking permit applies), on garden tours, and to relax beside you at Christina’s Bistro.

Fish Eagle hiking trail (permit applies) plus garden tours welcome leashed dogs. Combine with Christina’s Bistro rather than inventing an off-trail vineyard ramble.

Bellevue (Stellenbosch)

Leashed dogs on the outdoor lawn for wine-by-glass, platters and pizzas. Formal Manor House indoor tastings are a different product.

The outdoor lawn is the published day surface — treat vineyard rows as working farmland unless staff invite a guided walk.

Groot Constantia (Simon’s) (Constantia)

Simon’s welcomes leashed dogs at designated outdoor tables, with water bowls and a dedicated dog menu (à la bark menu PDF dated October 2024). Estate grounds: dogs on leads.

Estate grounds: dogs on leads. Simon’s outdoor dining is the meal stop after a short lead walk — not a substitute for a mountain trail.

Event-only and closed routes

Festival dog days (for example Wildekrans’s People, Pets & Pinotage when published) are not the same as an everyday trail policy. Seasonal closures for farming or winter conditions can shut published routes overnight — always read the activities page on the day you travel.

Phone-ahead only for older secondary trail claims: Klein Roosboom’s official walking route has been marked closed for farming and winter; do not plan it as an open dog walk.

Wildlife, livestock and farm dogs

Even on friendly estates, retractable leads around cattle, horses or resident farm dogs are a risk. Keep a short lead near dams and bee boxes. Scoop waste into bins the farm provides. Full context: leash rules and farm animals.

Packing for a farm walk

Collapsible bowl, spare water, bags, towel for muddy paws, and a mat for the car. Heat rises quickly on exposed vineyard edges — see what to pack and summer tips.

Pairing walks with tastings

Van Loveren trail then Christina’s Bistro. Boschendal day trails then a meal in a published dining area under the dog T&Cs — or overnight only if you booked Cottage 1685. Stanford Hills trails then Casa Cello terrace (pet menu). Do not stack three long walks in one day with a dog that also sits through tastings.

Permits, fees and honesty

Van Loveren’s Fish Eagle trail needs the hiking permit the farm describes — budget time at reception. Stanford Hills publishes a pet fee for stays (R250 per pet (official, Oct 2024)); day trail use still follows leash and event rules. Boschendal day guests follow dog T&Cs; overnight pets only at Cottage 1685.

What we leave out on purpose

We do not list farms whose only “walk” evidence is an old magazine feature or a closed activities notice. Klein Roosboom’s official walking route has been marked closed for farming and winter — phone ahead at most, and do not plan it as an open dog walk. Association “dog friendly” tags without trail text stay off this page.

After the walk

Shoes and paws pick up vineyard dust and ticks. Check the dog before the car, offer water in shade, and only then move to a tasting counter. A tired dog settles better at lunch — which is why trail-then-bistro at Van Loveren works so well.

Day-walk etiquette in 60 seconds

Leash on before the car door opens. Toilet break on the gravel verge the farm indicates, not on the manicured lawn edge. Yield to tractors and horses. If a resident dog approaches, ask staff before any greeting. End the walk before the dog is exhausted — tasting patience disappears when paws hurt.

When a walk should become a lawn day instead

If the dog is elderly, brachycephalic, or the UV index is extreme, swap the Fish Eagle trail for Christina’s Bistro garden seating, or swap Boschendal trails for a shorter lead stroll and an early exit. Ego itineraries injure dogs; lawn days still count as a win.

FAQs

Which wine farms have dog-friendly trails?

Boschendal’s dog T&Cs cover walking trails; Stanford Hills mentions estate walking trails; Van Loveren invites leashed dogs on the Fish Eagle trail (permit). Confirm distance and water before you set out.

Can dogs run off-leash among the vines?

Generally no. Published rules emphasise leashes.

Are picnic lawns the same as walks?

No. Warwick’s picnic lawns are a lawn product; Boschendal and Van Loveren speak to trails more directly. Use both product types honestly.

What about closed walking routes?

If the farm’s own activities page says closed, believe it — secondary travel articles can be years out of date.
