Warwick Wine Estate is a wine farm in Stellenbosch, Western Cape. About 42 km from Cape Town.
In the shadow of Stellenbosch’s iconic Simonsberg, where the mountain meets the Klapmutskop outcrop, Warwick Wine Estate has shaped South African Bordeaux-style winemaking for decades. Famous for the flagship Trilogy blend, pioneering bottled Cabernet Franc, vineyard safari drives, and leisurely dam-side hospitality, Warwick is a cornerstone stop on any Simonsberg-Stellenbosch wine route itinerary. The estate’s winemaking philosophy centres on vineyard blocks first—healthy, balanced vines, careful harvest decisions, and oak that supports rather than overwhelms—so that bottles confidently chosen in South Africa earn respect abroad.
Between 1771 and 1902 the farm was known as De Goede Sukses (“The Good Success”). After the Anglo-Boer War, Colonel William Alexander Gordon of the Warwickshire Regiment renamed it Warwick in tribute to his regiment. In 1964 Stan and Canadian-born Norma Ratcliffe purchased the property. Norma dreamed of fine wine while the family first paid down debt by selling grapes and farming mixed produce including pigs and peaches; she studied winemaking, experimented through the 1970s, and staged at Château Sénéjac in the Haut-Médoc—experience that shaped her Bordeaux ambitions for Simonsberg fruit.
Commercial Warwick wines began with the 1984 Cabernet Sauvignon (La Femme Bleu / Blue Lady). Trilogy followed in 1986 as a three-variety Bordeaux blend and has been produced every vintage since without interruption. Norma became one of the Cape’s first female winemakers and the first woman inducted into the Cape Winemakers Guild—her legacy lives in the First Lady range and the estate’s bold, characterful hospitality culture. After more than five decades of Ratcliffe stewardship (including son Mike Ratcliffe’s expansion era), the estate later passed to investment ownership while retaining its Cabernet Franc identity and visitor experiences.
Warwick’s vineyards benefit from the confluence of Simonsberg slopes and Klapmutskop—optimal drainage, varied aspects, and a warm-cool balance that helps ripen Cabernet Franc’s tannins and aromatics without losing freshness. That dual temperature signature is relatively rare and helps explain why Cabernet Franc thrives here when many Cape sites struggle to finish the variety cleanly.
At harvest, fruit is carefully assessed so only grapes at peak make the cellar. From crushing to bottling, handling is gentle with minimal intervention to preserve varietal character. Oak is used as a frame, never a mask. Panoramic views from vineyard safari routes make the terroir argument visceral: you see the mountain, the outcrop, and the vine rows that feed Trilogy.
Warwick was among the first in South Africa to bottle single-varietal Cabernet Franc (late 1980s)—a grape that remains the estate’s calling card and the structural heart of modern Trilogy.
Warwick celebrates Stellenbosch’s culture of long lunches and outdoor socialising. Embark on a vineyard safari drive to meet the “Big 5” noble grape varieties up close while enjoying panoramic Simonsberg views. Themed, characterful wine tastings suit both curious newcomers and serious Francophiles.
Settle in for leisurely lunches overlooking the mountain or at the water’s edge of the dam. Picnic boxes, burgers, and speciality cheese and charcuterie boards bring bold colours and flavours; plant-based and gluten-free options mean every guest can experience Warwick their way. Club Warwick exists for collectors seeking unlisted cellar treasures that rest quietly until the right hands claim them.
Across the Cape, Cabernet Franc is often a blending component; at Warwick it is a protagonist. Understanding Trilogy’s evolution toward Franc dominance helps visitors taste Simonsberg-Stellenbosch with fresh eyes—looking for red-fruit perfume, herbal lift, and tannin finesse rather than only Cabernet Sauvignon power. Vineyard safari commentary on the “Big 5” grape varieties reinforces that lesson in the landscape itself.
Food-friendly hospitality means Warwick works equally well as a leisurely lunch destination and as a serious red-wine pilgrimage. Bring friends with different preferences: one can deep-dive Trilogy verticals when available, while another enjoys a picnic board by the dam under Simonsberg skies. That flexibility is part of why Warwick endures as a favourite Stellenbosch wine route stop for locals and tourists alike.
Warwick sits on the Simonsberg side of Stellenbosch, convenient from the R44. Book safari drives and weekend tastings ahead. Summer invites dam-side lounging; cooler months favour structured red tastings. Allow two to three hours for safari plus tasting and lunch. Designate a driver—Simonsberg roads are winding and scenic. Combine with Uitkyk for heritage architecture, or continue toward Helshoogte for high-elevation Cabernet contrast after Warwick’s Franc-driven Trilogy.
