Thelema Mountain Vineyards is a wine farm in Stellenbosch, Western Cape. About 50 km from Cape Town.
Perched at the crest of Helshoogte Pass between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, Thelema Mountain Vineyards is one of the Cape Winelands’ most celebrated family-owned estates. Its south-eastern Simonsberg slopes deliver the cool, high-altitude conditions that have made Thelema a byword for classic Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Visitors following the Stellenbosch wine route toward Banghoek and Helshoogte find an estate whose wines express mountain elevation, granite soils, and a philosophy of minimal intervention that has endured since the first vintage.
In 1983, Gyles Webb—then an accountant from Durban whose passion for wine was ignited by a tasting of Puligny-Montrachet—purchased an old fruit farm on the Simonsberg with the support of his wife Barbara’s family, the McLeans. He completed studies in viticulture and oenology at Stellenbosch University, gained experience at Heitz Cellar in California, and returned to clear the land and plant vines. The manor house was restored, the winery was built in 1987, and the first wines under the Thelema label were released in 1988.
By the mid-1990s, Thelema’s releases routinely sold out within a month, establishing the estate among South Africa’s most sought-after producers. The name “Thelema” is drawn from François Rabelais’s fictional Abbey of Thélème, whose maxim—“do what thou wilt”—captures the family’s independent spirit. That same literary inspiration later named the flagship Bordeaux-style blend, Rabelais. Today the estate remains family-owned and managed, with Thomas Webb directing operations and long-serving winemaker Rudi Schultz guiding the cellar. A second property in cool-climate Elgin supplies the Sutherland range, extending Thelema’s mountain-wine identity beyond Stellenbosch.
Thelema sits high on Helshoogte, roughly six kilometres from Stellenbosch town, on the southeastern slopes of the Simonsberg in the Simonsberg-Stellenbosch ward. Vineyards climb to around 530 metres above sea level across a property of roughly 157 hectares. Summer daytime temperatures rarely climb much above 26°C, while cool nights and mountain breezes preserve acidity and aromatic freshness—ideal for structured Cabernet and elegant Chardonnay.
Soils are typically decomposed granite over clay, with good drainage on the steeper slopes. South-facing aspects and elevation create mesoclimates that favour slow ripening and concentrated fruit without excessive heat stress. Precision viticulture, including satellite imaging of vineyard vigour, helps the team manage each block individually so that site character reaches the bottle. Grapes are hand-harvested; much of the red-wine fermentation takes place outdoors in tanks that suit the naturally temperate mountain air.
Thelema’s reputation rests on classical Stellenbosch reds and mountain whites. Cabernet Sauvignon—including the distinctive “Mint” Cabernet from a eucalyptus-bordered block—anchors the red portfolio with cedar, blackcurrant, and fine tannins. Merlot Reserve and other Bordeaux varieties complement the range. The flagship Rabelais blend showcases the estate’s best parcels in a structured, age-worthy style.
Among whites, Thelema Chardonnay is a Cape benchmark: citrus and stone fruit framed by careful oak and mountain freshness. The Sutherland wines from Elgin add cooler-climate Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, and related styles for those seeking contrast within the same family of producers. Across both properties, the cellar philosophy is consistent: vineyard quality first, separate fermentation of individual blocks, and restrained oak that supports rather than masks varietal character.
The tasting room at Thelema Mountain Vineyards offers guided tastings of current and reserve releases in a setting that looks out over vines and mountain ridges. Knowledgeable staff walk guests through the estate’s history, Helshoogte terroir, and the differences between Stellenbosch and Elgin fruit. The restored manor house and landscaped surrounds make the visit feel intimate rather than industrial—suited to wine lovers who want depth rather than a rushed flight.
Advance booking is advisable in peak season, especially for larger groups or vertical tastings when available. The estate is a natural stop on a Helshoogte Pass itinerary that can include neighbouring Banghoek and Simonsberg properties. Combine a morning tasting at Thelema with lunch at nearby Helshoogte restaurants or a drive over the pass toward Franschhoek for a full Stellenbosch wine route day.
Helshoogte Pass is one of the most scenic links on any Stellenbosch wine route map, and Thelema sits near its emotional and viticultural high point. Guests often combine Thelema with neighbouring mountain estates for a concentrated morning of Cabernet and Chardonnay comparison, then descend toward Banghoek picnic destinations or Franschhoek for lunch. The contrast between Thelema’s high Simonsberg fruit and warmer valley-floor styles elsewhere in Stellenbosch is educational for serious tasters and enjoyable for casual visitors alike. Ask about current releases of Rabelais versus straight Cabernet if you want to understand how blend architecture differs from single-variety mountain expression.
Approach via Helshoogte Pass (R310) from Stellenbosch toward Franschhoek; the estate is clearly signposted near the top of the pass. Allow 60–90 minutes for tasting and a stroll among the vines. Summer (November–March) is warm and busy; autumn harvest and cooler winter months offer quieter visits and dramatic mountain light. Designated drivers or organised Stellenbosch wine-route transport are recommended. Confirm tasting hours and booking requirements on the official website before you travel.
