Wine of Origin region

Coastal Region

The historic heart of Cape wine, from Constantia to the Swartland.

435 farms currently mapped in this region.

The Coastal Region is the gravitational centre of Cape wine. It takes in the old Constantia farms on the Cape Peninsula, the granite slopes of Stellenbosch, the drakenstein bowl of Paarl and Franschhoek, Wellington's warmer inland benches, and the dry-farmed schist of the Swartland. Atlantic air is the unifying thread. Even inland valleys feel the Cape Doctor wind and a cooling marine influence that keeps harvests later than latitude alone would suggest.

This is also the tourism core of the Western Cape winelands. Most visitors based in Cape Town can reach a tasting room in under ninety minutes, which is why Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Constantia and Durbanville dominate search traffic. For Google and for travellers, the Coastal Region is not one destination but a cluster of districts with distinct soils, grape mixes and day-trip patterns.

Wine of Origin labelling here is nested. A bottle may say Western Cape, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch, or a ward such as Bottelary or Simonsberg-Stellenbosch. The more precise the origin claim, the tighter the vineyard footprint. WineFarmz maps farms to this hierarchy so each estate sits in the correct district and, where possible, the correct ward.
