Silvermist Vineyards: Organic Constantia Wine at Constantia Nek

Silvermist Vineyards (Silvermist Organic Wine Estate) sits on Main Road, Constantia Nek, on the upper slopes of the Constantia Wine Route with Table Mountain National Park at its edge. Founded by winemaker Gregory Brink Louw, the estate positions itself as home to the only organically certified cultivars on the Constantia wine route—vines grown without irrigation or artificial chemicals, pesticides, herbicides or fertilisers in farming and winemaking. Visitors come for organic wine, Japanese-fusion dining at KODO, destination dining at La Colombe on the same estate, a boutique hotel, Drumstruck shows, braai evenings and even a mountain zipline. For a Constantia day that mixes certified organic wine with serious food, Silvermist is a high-altitude, multi-experience stop.

History: Gum Trees to Organic Single-Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc

Official estate storytelling centres on hard clearing work before the first release: Gregory and his team spent months felling the first 1.5 hectares of gum trees, years clearing wood, and roughly a decade before the first Silvermist Organic Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2010 was released. That arc—invasive trees out, cool-climate Constantia vines in—frames the brand’s “passion, perseverance and sustainability” message. Silvermist remains family-owned and oriented toward organic certification rather than conventional high-input viticulture.

Constantia Nek’s elevation and cool Atlantic influence suit the crisp whites historically associated with the valley. Silvermist’s public wine narrative emphasises Sauvignon Blanc and organically certified estate wines tasted with the winemaker or via the restaurant sommelier—not a long list of Bordeaux icons alone.

Wines: Organic Constantia, Winemaker-Led

Silvermist markets certified organic Constantia wines grown, harvested and crafted on these Constantiaberg slopes. Gregory’s stated philosophy is purist: wine as a product of its environment, without irrigation or synthetic inputs. Named commercial flight lists and rand tasting fees are not published on the live wine page as of research for this guide (2026-10-01)—so treat any third-party price as unverified until the estate confirms when you book.

Tasting is presented in several official ways: sessions with the winemaker; immersive tastings that can combine wine with Drumstruck African drumming energy; and walk-in tasting directed to KODO, where sommelier Gift hosts guests during restaurant hours. Food-and-wine pairing with Japanese-inspired cuisine at KODO is explicitly promoted.

Visiting: KODO Walk-Ins, Winemaker Sessions & Estate Experiences

Walk-in wine tasting (verified): visit KODO restaurant on the estate and ask for Gift, the sommelier. Official wine-page / KODO windows: Wednesday–Sunday, Lunch 12:00–15:00 and Dinner 18:30–20:00. There is no separately published standalone tasting-room timetable beyond those KODO service hours—so plan walk-ins inside the restaurant’s open windows, not as a morning cellar-door drop-in on a Monday or Tuesday.

Winemaker / immersive tastings: book via Hotel@silvermistestate.co.za or +27 21 110 5420. Immersive packages may include Drumstruck; historical event PDFs listed ticket structures, but live Drumstruck HTML does not restate current rand prices—confirm when booking. Traditional braai evenings are listed Wednesday–Sunday on the wine page to enhance experiences.

KODO (Chef Cheyne Morrisby): bold Asian-fusion / Japanese-inspired small plates; same Wed–Sun lunch and dinner hours; private events via events@silvermistestate.co.za or the hotel desk.

La Colombe (on Silvermist Estate): separate fine-dining restaurant; official menus have included weekday lunch from R1695 pp (stated valid until 30 Nov 2026 on lacolombe.restaurant) and other menus around R2595 pp—deposit required; no children under 8; no BYO. Book via reservations@lacolombe.co.za / +27 21 794 2390, not the tasting-room email alone.

Also on estate: Silvermist Hotel (boutique suites; rates not published on the hotel page), zipline (seven lines / twelve platforms into mountain terrain bordering the national park), and private events/weddings. Address: Main Rd, Constantia Nek, Cape Town, 7806.

Practical Tips for Constantia Nek

  • Walk-in tasting: KODO Wed–Sun lunch/dinner; ask for sommelier Gift—do not expect a Monday–Tuesday public tasting desk.
  • Book immersive / winemaker / Drumstruck / hotel: +27 21 110 5420 / Hotel@silvermistestate.co.za.
  • Tasting fee: not published on the live wine page—ask before you sit.
  • La Colombe: book separately; menus from roughly R1695–R2595 pp on official restaurant pages—confirm current menus.
  • Organic claim: estate copy states only organically certified cultivars on the Constantia route—useful SEO differentiator; certification status is the estate’s published claim.
  • Parking & altitude: Constantia Nek is steep and popular—arrive early on weekends; Uber is often easier than navigating limited parking.
  • Combine: hotel stay, KODO lunch, organic tasting and (if booked) zipline or Drumstruck make a full half-day; keep La Colombe as its own reservation block.

Why Visit Silvermist Vineyards

Visit Silvermist if you want organic Constantia wine with a clear sustainability story, walk-in tasting through KODO, optional winemaker immersion, and access to one of Cape Town’s most celebrated restaurants on the same estate. It is less suitable if you need a simple morning walk-in flight with a printed R-price board and no restaurant booking—those travellers should confirm a winemaker slot or choose a neighbouring Constantia cellar door with published tasting menus. When timed around KODO hours or a booked immersion, Silvermist delivers a distinctive Constantia Nek chapter for the Western Cape wine portal: altitude, organic vines, and hospitality that spans casual Asian-fusion to destination fine dining.

Lawns

  • zipline (Cape Town Ziplines)

Silvermist Vineyards is a limited family pick, about 18 min from Cape Town without traffic, and it's all about the zipline. Cape Town Ziplines runs a seven-line course on this organic estate. Secondary listings give a minimum age of about 6, so check the age rules with the operator when you book. It suits adventurous tweens and teens best. Afterwards, KODO serves Asian-fusion lunch and dinner Wednesday to Sunday with estate views, and its sommelier handles wine tasting. We found no kids menu. La Colombe, the separate fine-dining restaurant on the estate, has its own policy of no children under 8, which doesn't apply to the zipline or KODO. There's no dedicated playground or picnic lawn, so treat Silvermist as an adventure stop rather than a lazy family lunch.

Before you go

  • Book ahead, especially on weekends and in school holidays.
How old do kids need to be for the zipline?

Secondary listings give a minimum of about 6. Check with Cape Town Ziplines when you book.

Is there a kids menu?

None was found at KODO.

Can children eat at La Colombe?

La Colombe, a separate restaurant on the estate, doesn't allow children under 8.
