Fairview: Paarl’s iconic wine, cheese and goat destination

Fairview on Suid Agter-Paarl Road (Suider-Paarl) is one of the Western Cape’s most visited cellar doors—and for good reason. Under Charles Back, the farm combines Rhône-leaning wines (including the famous Goats do Roam range), a working cheese dairy, the landmark Goat Tower, a busy deli, farm bakery breads, and the country-style Goatshed restaurant. For a Paarl wine route day that needs something for every age and appetite, Fairview is the high-energy anchor stop.

Address the farm as Fairview (cellar door) rather than confusing it with related brands such as Fairvalley: this guide covers what you can book and taste on the Suider-Paarl estate itself.

Location and why it works on a Cape day

Fairview sits in the Agter-Paarl / Suid Agter-Paarl pocket—easy to combine with neighbouring Suider-Paarl cellars or a loop toward Franschhoek and Stellenbosch. Expect a working farm atmosphere: goats as mascots, cheese counters, and tasting pods designed for social groups rather than silent bar stools. Parking and queues can build on weekends and peak season; arrive early or pre-book premium and large-group tastings.

Wine and cheese tastings (current cellar-door menu)

Official tasting-room offerings (verify on fairview.co.za/tasting-room before you travel):

  • Farmer’s Tasting — R105 pp: daily selection of 6 wines with 4 cheeses and 2 cured meats, served in barrel-shaped tasting pods
  • Standard Tasting — R95 pp: 6 wines paired with 6 Fairview cow and goat’s milk cheeses
  • Kids’ Tasting — R65 pp: 5 sweeter cheeses, 1 sweet treat, and a glass of EGA or lemonade
  • Cheese Tasting — R45 pp: daily selection of 6 cheeses

Hours: tasting room Monday–Sunday 09:00–17:00; closed Christmas Day and New Year’s Day; closes 16:00 on 24 and 31 December. Groups of 10+ must book via tasting@fairview.co.za or +27 21 863 2450.

Beryl Back Master Tasting

For a quieter, tutored flight away from the main pods, the Beryl Back Master Tasting room (named for Charles Back’s late mother) runs Monday–Sunday 09:00–16:00 and is limited to smaller groups of up to 6 people; pre-booking is recommended.

  • Premium Master — R250 pp: 8 premium wines including two vintage wines, with 6 cheeses, 2 cured meats, fresh bread and farm olive oil
  • Daily Master — R175 pp: 8 premium wines with 8 cheeses, fresh bread and olive oil

Book through the same tasting contacts: master-tasting page.

Goat Tower, Goatshed, deli and bakery

The Goat Tower has stood above the Goatshed since 1981, inspired by a tower Charles Back saw in Portugal; farm goats remain the estate’s mascots, and September kid season is occasionally celebrated at the tower when nannies welcome new kids (seasonal—check the farm’s goat-tower page).

Goatshed Restaurant is the sit-down country eatery using farm produce. Book tables via the Visit / Goatshed channels: goatshed@fairview.co.za / +27 21 863 3609. Official Goatshed hours are typically Monday–Sunday 09:00–16:30 (kitchen and bar close 16:00); closed 25 December and 1 January—confirm same-day service on the site.

The Deli & Shop (inside the tasting complex) stocks 50+ cow and goat cheese styles plus condiments, jams, free-range eggs and meats. The on-farm bakery supplies artisanal breads (ciabatta, honey & oat, rye, croissants, seed loaf, bretzels; seasonal mosbolletjies from grape must) sold through the deli and Goatshed.

Signature wine personality

Expect Rhône-inspired reds and whites, MCC appearances, and the playful Goats do Roam story that grew from goats wandering vineyard rows. Cellar-door exclusives rotate through the pods—ask hosts what is poured that day rather than assuming a fixed SKU list.

FAQ

Is Fairview only about goats?

No—the goats and cheese are famous, but the tasting pods and Master room are serious wine experiences with curated pairings.

Do I need a reservation?

Recommended for Master tastings and required for groups of 10+. Smaller parties often walk in during published hours.

Where is it exactly?

Suid Agter-Paarl Road, Suider-Paarl 7646—Agter-Paarl side of the Paarl wine map.

Why Fairview belongs on a Western Cape wine portal

Few Paarl estates pack wine, cheese, bakery, restaurant and a genuine landmark (the Goat Tower) into one GPS pin with transparent, published prices. Use Fairview when your itinerary needs a destination day—not a quiet boutique hour—and keep Goatshed and Master bookings separate from casual pod tastings so timing stays realistic.
