Stellenbosch · Western Cape
Weltevreden Estate is a wine farm in Stellenbosch, Western Cape. About 40 km from Cape Town.
Weltevreden Estate — branded Weltevreden 1692 — is a restored historic homestead on Welgevonden Boulevard, Cloetesville, Stellenbosch, at the foot of Simonsberg Mountain. The first title deed was registered to Hans Henske in 1692; the estate calls itself the third farm north of the early Stellenbosch settlement. It is a National Heritage Monument and a high point of neo-classical Cape Dutch architecture, with an H-shaped manor, elaborate gables (including unusual wagon-wheel motifs linked in local legend to Piet Retief and his sister Deborah Retief, who owned the farm with Christoffel Esterhuysen from 1812) and a Cape Dutch werf dating to 1804.
The 1812–1815 building boom that also produced Boschendal, Zevenwacht, Neethlingshof, Old Nectar and Navarre frames Weltevreden’s architectural status. Over three centuries the land passed through Badenhorst, Retief/Esterhuysen, Smith, Peel and Bezuidenhout families — the Bezuidenhouts being only the sixth family in roughly 300 years. Chris Peel’s late-20th-century restoration saved derelict buildings with meticulous woodwork; the Bezuidenhout family purchased in 2012, completed manor restoration in 2013, and reopened the estate to the public the same year. Although some wine-route indexes group Weltevreden with Bottelary Hills listings, the physical address and estate narrative are firmly Simonsberg / Welgevonden — plan navigation accordingly.
Winemaking revived after the family acquired adjacent Weltevreden Hills vineyards (2019) — uncovering decades-old rootstocks — and released the first Bertha vintage in 2020 with winemaker Bennie Booysen. The brand honours Bertha, the family’s matriarch, celebrated for resilience and resourcefulness, and targets fresh, food-friendly, limited-volume Cape wines that reflect adaptable Cape spirit. The core portfolio typically includes:
South-facing slopes cooled by Atlantic / Table Bay breezes guide morning hand harvests aimed at preserving fruit profile through the cellar. Tasting of the full Bertha range has been listed around R50–R80 per person (often refundable against purchase); Bertha + Marnella Macarons® pairings around R90–R150 depending on current rate cards. Book tastings and lunch via info@weltevredenestate.com. Shop links via the estate and Bertha brand pages when stocking gifts.
Jonkershuis Restaurant (founded 2017) is frequently called a hidden gem by guests who arrive for the kids’ area and stay for the food and atmosphere. On-estate food culture has also included Blos Bakery (from 2016) and Marnella Macarons (from 2018), reinforcing a family-day rhythm of coffee, pastry and wine rather than a stern cellar-only visit. The estate markets weddings, conferences and life celebrations against Simonsberg views — expanded wedding capacity from 2015 onward — with the Manor House and gardens providing ceremony and reception backdrops that photograph beautifully in soft Cape light.
Weltevreden leans hard into art as visitor experience. The Manor House has hosted works associated with names such as Christo Coetzee, Francis Bacon, Otto Landsberg and Zerk de Villiers. More than 100 sculptures — many by Ruhan Janse van Rensburg and Charles Goddard — hide in the gardens and along Semillon vine lanes, sometimes paired with poetry. Premium tasting options may include a self-guided sculpture walk. A glass of Bertha in hand is the estate’s preferred way to “read” the trail: potter and winemaker as parallel crafts of dedication. Arrive curious, leave inspired — the estate’s visitor motto fits the art-forward grounds.
Boutique stays include elevated Manor House chambers under thatch, a self-catering farm cottage, and renovated river cottage / loft options beside the water. A large shady play area and kids’ carnival heritage (Kids Carnival founded 2014) make Weltevreden unusually family-forward for a National Monument site. Guests repeatedly cite shade, space for children, good food and approachable wine as the reason they return. Accessibility amenities (paths, bathrooms, parking) appear on Visit Stellenbosch listings — confirm specific needs when booking. Lawn games and garden wandering round out slower afternoons between tastings.
Use Weltevreden when you want heritage architecture without sacrificing family comfort; when Bertha’s accessible whites and Shiraz suit a lunch pairing; or when a sculpture garden walk offers a break from cellar-hopping. It is not a Bottelary Hills Pinotage pilgrimage stop — it is a Simonsberg heritage day with wine attached.
Wine-route indexes sometimes list it under Bottelary Hills, but the estate sits at Simonsberg / Welgevonden, Cloetesville. Use that for maps and driving.
The Bertha range — typically Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Rosé and Shiraz — with optional macaron pairings.

Weltevreden Estate is a limited family option after a 2026 repositioning as a refined wine and art destination. Children may still roam the gardens and stay in accommodation, but official news states that carnival/play equipment and the kiddies menu have been discontinued. There is no dedicated play area or kids menu now. Outdoor lawns remain for a quiet stroll, and Bertha Wines tastings take place at the Jonkershuis. Do not expect playgrounds, kids programmes or casual kids meals. Come only for a calm garden visit with older, well-behaved children.
