Barton Vineyards & Villas on the R43 to Hermanus

Barton Vineyards (official branding Barton Vineyards and Villas) is a working wine-and-olive farm on the R43 Hermanus Road at Botrivier, about an hour from Cape Town International Airport on the drive toward Walker Bay. The property borders the Kogelberg biosphere context and markets never-ending valley views, a Fynbos Reserve, and five Tuscan-style self-catering villas plus a cottage. Inventory material sometimes lists bartonfarm.co.za; the live visitor and tasting content that we verified sits on bartonvineyards.co.za, with reservations emailed to reservations@barton.farm.

Plan Barton when you want Bot River tasting, wood-fired pizza, olive oil, and the option to sleep on the farm — not a Hemel-en-Aarde Pinot crawl.

Terroir, plantings and blue-crane logo

Official about copy describes roughly 500 acres producing wine and olives, with about 33 hectares of vines on cool southerly slopes. Cultivars listed include Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Mourvèdre and Malbec. Six hectares of older Chenin Blanc are highlighted; further plantings from 2003 extended the vineyards. Climate notes: frost-free growing season averaging about 19–22 °C, Walker Bay sea breezes aiding acidity in whites and colour/tannin in reds. Soils: gravelly coarse sand with ferric / ferrous quartzite over weathered sandstone and clay patches — low to moderate vigour, concentrated flavour.

The first Barton wine was Chenin Blanc 2003. Cellar construction began in 2006; the tasting room opened early 2007; the cellar was fully operational for the 2008 harvest. The farm logo is the threatened Blue Crane, South Africa’s national bird — a conservation cue rather than a tasting-flight gimmick.

Wine & olive oil tasting (Wednesday–Sunday)

Official tasting-room hours: Wednesday–Sunday 10:00–16:00. Closed Monday–Tuesday for tasting and pizza — do not build a midweek-early itinerary around Barton without checking villa-only access.

Published flights (per person; walk-in Wed–Sun):

  • White flight R80 — Sauvignon Blanc, Barton Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Merlot Rosé (vintages as listed on the current tasting page)
  • Red flight R120 — Barton Rouge, Syrah
  • Wooded / premium flight R180 — Wooded Chenin Blanc, Wooded Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah
  • Olive oil — Frantoio and Favolosa
  • Buy six or more bottles and the tasting is free

Pair flights with wood-fired pizza (same hours): Barton Special, Mediterranean, Salami Supreme, Hawaiian, Italian Garden (vegetarian) — published prices on the tasting page run roughly R130–R180. Platters of cheeses, cured meats, crackers, olives and seasonal fruit: for two R190, for four R350.

Inventory shorthand often cites Sauvignon Blanc / Shiraz / Cabernet as signature styles; the live flight list is broader — taste what is open and buy what you enjoy.

Stay: villas with pools and hot tubs

FAQ

Not for tasting or pizza on the official calendar (Wed–Sun only). Villas operate by reservation separately.

Yes — Frantoio and Favolosa are listed on the tasting-room page.

Is there overnight accommodation?

Yes — five Tuscan-style villas and a cottage; enquire for rates and pet policy on the cottage.

How far is Barton from Cape Town?

Official copy places the farm about one hour from Cape Town International Airport on the Hermanus road.

Why Bot River suits this stop

Bot River is the Overberg gateway before the final coastal push to Hermanus. Barton rewards travellers who want a working farm atmosphere, fynbos conservation context, and a practical lunch (pizza or platter) without needing a separate restaurant booking in town. Because Mondays and Tuesdays are closed for tasting, sequence Barton with other Bot River cellars that publish matching midweek hours, or use a villa night to wake up already on the R43 for a Wednesday opening. Always re-check the tasting-room page for current flight vintages and pizza prices before you quote rand figures to companions.
