Vergenoegd Löw Wine Estate is a wine farm in Stellenbosch, Western Cape. About 31 km from Cape Town.
Vergenoegd Löw Wine Estate — Dutch vergenoegd meaning “content” or “well satisfied” — is one of South Africa’s oldest continuously working farms, with a wine-growing tradition dating from a 1696 grant. The 160 ha property sits on the coastal edge of the Stellenbosch wine region near Faure / Somerset West (Helderberg Wine Route), less than 5 km from False Bay. Maritime breezes keep temperatures roughly 3°C cooler than inland Stellenbosch pockets, while ancient marine-bed, lime-rich soils give the site an unusual Cape signature the estate calls merroir — land shaped by the sea.
This is emphatically a Helderberg / False Bay fringe visit, with Table Mountain, Helderberg peaks and Atlantic light often in frame. Do not confuse the Löw-era hospitality reboot with inland Bottelary brands that share similar-sounding Afrikaans names.
In 2015, German entrepreneur, historian and heritage advocate Prof. Dr Dr Peter Löw bought a proud but rundown farm and launched a whole-property revitalisation: soil mapping, regenerative agriculture, architectural restoration of the 1773 Homestead and historic werf, landscaping, wine quality and luxury hospitality. Vergenoegd Löw is framed as part of Löw’s European Heritage Project and holds WWF Conservation Champion status for habitat and environmentally responsible farming.
Since about 2017 the team has been replanting after detailed soil work; published figures put just over 50–51 ha under vine, roughly three-quarters red varieties. Cellar philosophy is to “follow the grapes” — minimal intervention once healthy regenerative fruit arrives. Cap Classique (including Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay-led Heritage expressions such as Livia) sits alongside still whites and reds that speak of cooler coastal ripening.
The estate’s most photographed workforce is a flock of 1,000+ Indian Runner ducks, introduced in 1989 under previous Faure-family ownership and retained as living pest control. Twice daily they parade past Homestead and Geuwels lawns toward vineyards or the vlei, eating snails, insects and weeds while fertilising soils — a free visitor spectacle usually noted around 09:00 and 12:00. Dexter cattle, cover crops, solar power, drip irrigation and water recycling complete the regenerative story. No pets on duck-run days for animal safety.
Wine Lounge hours: Monday–Sunday 10:00–16:00. Published flights (confirm on vergenoegd.co.za):
Also notable: free self-guided Art Walk (~15 works, Dylan Lewis and others), seasonal Farm Tea programmes (e.g. limited September sittings at Clara’s Barn), Homestead breakfast / farm tea / caviar–Cap Classique experiences, and casual plates at Geuwels. Luxury accommodation spans lodge rooms, vineyard suites, cottages, a presidential suite and Owner’s Villa — rates typically bundle breakfast, welcome drink, tasting privileges and an ecology tour.

Beyond flights, Vergenoegd Löw sells a slower Cape-farm rhythm. Geuwels (gables) leans casual breakfast and shareable lunch plates with lawn views toward the duck commute. The restored 1773 Homestead hosts more intimate, reservation-led moments — farm breakfast when hotel occupancy allows, heritage-inspired farm teas, and premium caviar with Cap Classique or Champagne. Spa treatments and ecology tours with the estate ranger deepen overnight stays. When you taste, ask how lime-rich seabed soils and False Bay breezes show in current Chenin, Cap Classique, Merlot or Cabernet pours; staff often frame the wines as honest expressions of regenerative fruit rather than heavily manipulated cellar showpieces.
The Art Walk’s blue cobblestones and QR artist stories turn a post-tasting stroll into a sculpture-park interlude — useful for mixed groups where not everyone wants a second flight. Families should note duck-safety pet rules; couples and small groups often book Indigenous Tasting as the one memorable food-and-wine anchor of a Somerset West day.
Ideal as a half-day or overnight: morning ducks, Wine Lounge or Indigenous Tasting, lunch at Geuwels, Art Walk, then spa or suite downtime. Pair with other Helderberg cellars if you want a full wine-route loop, or treat Vergenoegd as a standalone heritage-and-hospitality destination between Cape Town International Airport and Hermanus.
