Stellenzicht Vineyards is a wine farm in Stellenbosch, Western Cape. About 37 km from Cape Town.
Stellenzicht Vineyards occupies a storied Stellenbosch Berg site in the prized Golden Triangle, midway between Stellenbosch and Helderberg mountain influences and cooled by False Bay sea breezes. Estate history begins in 1692, when the first owner established a farm that would become Stellenzicht—local legend notes early naming confusion with nearby Rustenburg/Rustenberg grants under Governor Simon van der Stel’s wider land policy. Historical profiles describe a farm of roughly 227 hectares with on the order of 100 hectares under vine at peak descriptions, and vineyard altitudes spanning about 100 m to 400 m, creating multiple meso-climates on one property.
An early title deed reportedly dismissed the ground as “not good for crops, only cattle, too many rocks.” That rocky limitation later proved a viticultural gift. The modern chapter opened with a 2017 revival: regenerative farming, alien vegetation removal, fynbos restoration from the Helderberg, vineyard replanting matched to soil studies, and a renewed focus on terroir-driven wines for both traditionalists and New World drinkers. The estate’s living symbol is the dragonfly—highly sensitive bio-indicators that returned as wetlands and habitats recovered, embodying the balance philosophy now printed across brand storytelling.
Stellenzicht’s critical fame was turbocharged by the 1994 Syrah, which John Platter flagged in the 1997 guide as potentially “the priciest, most prized modern Cape wine.” Plant material from that legendary block still informs estate Syrah plantings—the “legend lives on” narrative remains central. When new ownership surveyed the land in 2017, sharp stones scattered across the farm proved to be prehistoric Acheulean hand axes crafted by early humans. From that discovery the flagship Acheulean Range was born, linking deep geological and human time to current bottles.
Earlier decades associated the cellar with winemaker Guy Webber and experiments such as Rhapsody, a Shiraz–Pinotage fusion. The current team listed on stellenzicht.com includes Estate Manager & Winemaker L'Ré Hughes, Assistant Winemaker Stian Victor, Viticulturist Nico Nortje, Sales & Marketing Manager Janine Lategan, Hospitality Manager Bianca van den Bergh, Brand Manager Anneke van der Merwe, and farm/office colleagues who keep regenerative programmes and the Wine Pod running. Values statements stress sustainability, balance, respect for nature and minimal yet attentive intervention.
Stellenzicht keeps a contented herd of cattle as working partners: they control weeds without chemical mowing in unused blocks, return manure nutrients under monitoring, and enhance ecological function through strategic grazing. Indigenous flora re-establishment has restored biodiversity corridors. In parallel, a solar farm of 668 panels delivers about 300 kW capacity and an estimated annual output exceeding 600 MWh, aligning cellar and hospitality energy use with the same light-touch ethos as the Wine Pod’s architecture.

Guided tastings are designed to show estate character rather than anonymous flight sheets; wood-fired pizza and artisanal platters extend visits into casual lunches with mountain views.
Visitor heart is the Wine Pod, a nature-inspired tasting room raised on “crow’s feet” without a concrete slab so it integrates into the landscape and can be relocated. Built from roughly 80% recyclable materials, it provides natural insulation that reduces winter energy use—the same sustainability brief as the dragonfly and solar programmes. Despite sitting only about 5 km from Stellenbosch town on Upper Blaauwklippen Road, the Pod feels a world away between Stellenbosch and Helderberg mountain backdrops.
