Boutique red-wine house — “home of the stars”

Stellekaya is a family-owned boutique winery devoted to barrel-matured noble reds from Stellenbosch’s Blaauwklippen Valley slopes in the so-called Golden Triangle. The name itself is a carefully stacked metaphor: Stellenbosch compressed with Italian stelle (“stars”), isiXhosa kaya (“home”), and a phonetic wink at Italian prestige endings such as –caia (think Sassicaia). Marketing shorthand calls it Home of the stars—and constellation labels (Orion, Cygnus, Hercules and kin) mirror founder Dave Lello’s amateur astronomy as much as his love of classic red blends.

Critical navigation note: the Lello family estate vineyards and home sit high on Blaauwklippen Road / Paradyskloof (~eight hectares under vine), while the working cellar and appointment tasting room operate at Bosman’s Crossing, 11 Distillery Road, Stellenbosch Central, beneath Papegaaiberg. Put the wrong pin in your GPS and you may climb an unpaved hill to a pink farmhouse when your booking is actually in town—or vice versa. Always confirm which address your appointment uses.

Lello family story

  • 1998 — Dave Lello bought a Blaauwklippen Valley portion of former Stellenrust land that had deeper roots in historic Rustenburgh / early settler grants; neighbouring parcels of the old farm became other well-known Stellenbosch estates
  • 1999 — Stellekaya launched from Dave’s passion for red wine, a wish to build a distinctive New World brand, and appetite for the adventure; early Merlot releases announced the project
  • Formative vintages benefited from Cape mentoring networks (contemporary reports mention figures such as Jan Coetzee and Beyers Truter advising early makes)
  • 2002 — Jane Lello joined; brand and market presence grew
  • 2003 — A historic brandy production house at Bosman’s Crossing was converted into a specialist ~100-ton red facility, deliberately separate from the hillside home so the family could live out of town yet remain tied to a storied production precinct
  • 2016 — Jane assumed full vine-to-consumer leadership and expanded international distribution with notable success
  • Family Rottweilers Stella and Giani feature in estate storytelling and visitor lore

Quality over quantity is non-negotiable: small volumes, hand work, French oak, super-premium intent.

Winemaking approach

Published process notes read like a classical red playbook adapted to Stellenbosch fruit:

  • Harvested fruit cooled on arrival and hand sorted
  • Cold maceration to lock fruit character before alcoholic fermentation
  • Traditional pigeage (punch-down) in open fermentation bins
  • Pressing in a wooden basket press
  • One hundred percent maturation in French oak barrels

Core passions remain Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Sangiovese, with Pinotage appearing in Cape-blend work. This is not a high-throughput white-wine cellar.

Wine portfolio

Shop and catalog themes (vintages change—see stellekaya.com/buywine):

  • Varietal and reserve bottlings: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc Reserve, Merlot, Malbec
  • Orion — Bordeaux-leaning Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc (with Reserve counterparts when declared)
  • Cape Cross — Cape blend weaving Pinotage with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot
  • Hercules — Super-Tuscan-inspired fusion of Sangiovese with Cabernet and Merlot
  • Cygnus Rosé — the star-themed rosato extension of the range

Understanding Stellekaya usually means tasting blends and reserves in one guided sitting rather than grabbing a single casual pour.

Visiting and tasting

Homepage rule: tastings by appointment only. The booking page lists an approximately one-hour portfolio tasting for about R190 at 11 Distillery Road, Bosman’s Crossing. Cancel or reschedule at least two days ahead; arriving more than ten minutes late can forfeit the slot.

  • Cellar / tasting: 11 Distillery Road, Stellenbosch Central, Stellenbosch, 7600
  • Estate vineyards: Blaauwklippen Road, Paradyskloof, Stellenbosch, 7600
  • Email: wine@stellekaya.com
  • Phone: +27 82 894 4764

If you are invited to the hillside estate itself, expect a different access profile from the Distillery Road cellar—confirm road conditions if you drive a low-clearance vehicle.

Stellenbosch itinerary fit

Stellekaya rewards red-wine specialists and travellers who prefer boutique appointment culture to crowded tourist farms. Book Distillery Road when you are already moving through Stellenbosch town or Bosman’s Crossing; treat any vineyard-home visit as a separate privilege arranged with the family. Pair with other Blaauwklippen / Golden Triangle red producers if you are constructing a Cabernet–Merlot–Franc day. Exporters and club buyers often leave with mixed cases after tasting Orion beside Hercules and Cape Cross—the blend philosophy is easier to grasp in glass than on a shelf talker.

Visit tips

  • Book online or email—there are no reliable public walk-in hours
  • Double-check cellar versus estate coordinates before you depart
  • Ask for Orion, Hercules and Cape Cross if you want the fusion story explained
  • Reserve hunters should request Cabernet Franc Reserve or Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve when stock allows
  • Arrive early enough to meet the ten-minute grace rule
  • Ideal stop for collectors who value conversation with owners or cellar staff over selfie lawns
  • Combine with a town lunch in Stellenbosch after the Distillery Road tasting to keep logistics simple
