Spier Wine Farm is a wine farm in Stellenbosch, Western Cape. About 40 km from Cape Town.
Spier Wine Farm is one of Stellenbosch’s most visited destinations—a regenerative wine farm established in 1692 at Vlottenburg on the Stellenbosch Valley floor, roughly 40 minutes from Cape Town and about 20 minutes from Cape Town International Airport. Across some 650 hectares of restored renosterveld and fynbos, Spier combines the oldest dated cellar still in use in South Africa, a 76-room hotel and spa, soil-to-plate dining, contemporary art, and award-winning wines from regeneratively farmed vineyards. For travellers who want heritage, hospitality, and hands-on farm experiences in one place, Spier is a flagship stop on the Stellenbosch wine route.
Long before colonial grants, San hunter-gatherers and Cochoqua Khoikhoi communities lived along these rivers. In 1692 Governor Simon van der Stel granted the first Spier title deed to Arnoud Jansz, establishing one of Stellenbosch’s earliest wine farms. By 1754 more than 30,000 vines flourished here. Ancient oaks—some associated with plantings from the 1680s—still shade gardens and werf. The farm is renowned for 21 Cape Dutch gables, more than any other farm in the country, and for heritage structures that now host tastings, art, and lodging.
In 1971 Neil Joubert of Spier co-founded the Stellenbosch Wine Route with Frans Malan (Simonsig) and Spatz Sperling (Delheim)—a tourism innovation that reshaped Cape wine travel. Since 1993 the Enthoven family has guided Spier’s evolution toward inclusive, ethical farming and cultural investment. Organic conversion begun in the 2010s led to certified organic harvests; Growing for Good initiatives span water-sensitive design, living soils, renewable energy, community learning, and support for South African art. Spier openly acknowledges difficult chapters of Cape wine history, including slavery, as part of building a more equitable future.
At Vlottenburg / Stellenbosch Valley (approximately 33.97°S, 18.78°E) beside the Eerste River, Spier’s regeneratively managed vineyards and pastures sit within a large ecological restoration project. Rewilded fynbos gardens surround the hotel; the Wilds offer indigenous wetland and renosterveld walks that change with Cape seasons. Farming philosophy centres on soil health—good wines from good soil and good people—linking cellar, kitchen gardens, and pasture-raised produce in a closed narrative of place.
Nine collections span everyday to flagship:
Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, and Cape blends frequently earn international scores—taste them on the farm beside dams and mountain views.
Spier is built for an hour, a day, or a weekend. Wine tastings (guided or by the glass), farm and fynbos walks, Segway vineyard tours, cycling, picnics, and art installations fill a visit. Dining includes Veld and Garden Room soil-to-plate restaurants, Vadas Smokehouse & Bakery, and seasonal menus from farm gardens and pastures. The Spier Hotel offers 76 rooms, suites, and villas with heated outdoor pool, rooftop bar, Buzz Club for children, gym, and the Cape Herbal Bath House spa using botanicals grown on the farm. The Cowshed Shop and contemporary art curated by the Spier Arts Trust extend the cultural offering. Hotel guests enjoy walking access to nearly every farm activity.
Few Stellenbosch wine estates match Spier’s breadth: 1692 heritage, regenerative credibility, serious wine collections, family-friendly hotel infrastructure, and a living arts programme. It is ideal for multi-generational trips, fly-in visitors needing a one-stop winelands base, and travellers who care as much about soil and community as about what’s in the glass.
Spier is easily reached from Cape Town via the N2 and R310 / Vlottenburg roads—often a first or last Stellenbosch wine-route stop around airport timings. Book hotel rooms, spa rituals, and popular tastings ahead. Wear walking shoes for the Wilds and art trail. Families should note Buzz Club and kid-friendly farm pacing. Confirm which tasting venues (rooftop, cellar, garden) operate on your date. Allow at least half a day; overnight stays reveal the farm’s quieter mornings and evenings.
Spier’s 76-room hotel transforms a wine-farm visit into a regenerative stay: rewilded gardens, Cape Herbal Bath House rituals, rooftop bar evenings, and Buzz Club for children mean multi-generational groups can share one address. Soil-to-plate restaurants draw from on-farm gardens and pastures; art from the Spier Arts Trust threads through manor, hotel, and landscape. Growing for Good programmes—water-sensitive design, living soils, renewable energy, community learning, nursery work—give substance to marketing claims and appeal to travellers who choose Stellenbosch destinations for impact as well as leisure.
Wine-wise, move from accessible Seaward or canned styles through organic lines to 21 Gables and Frans K. Smit flagships to taste the full regenerative ladder. Founding Wine Route history (1971) plus 1692 title origins place Spier at the centre of Stellenbosch Valley storytelling. Use it as airport-proximate base, dedicate a morning to the Wilds and tastings, and branch to Helderberg or town cellars from a calm Vlottenburg hub.
Signature guided tasting: choose three wines from the Signature range plus one each from premium ranges 21 Gables, Creative Block, and Seaward. Indoor art space or outdoor terrace overlooking the farm dam.
