Helderberg family winery halfway between two towns

Somerbosch Wines is the public face of Die Fonteine Farm on the R44 between Stellenbosch and Somerset West, cupped by the foothills of the Helderberg. The Roux family invented the brand name as a geographic pun and promise: the farm sits almost exactly midway between those two historic towns—Somerset + Stellenbosch—while the landholding itself retains the older name Die Fonteine (“the fountains”).

Cool Atlantic air moves inland across this corridor, joining diverse soils and Helderberg aspect to shape a wide, friendly portfolio: whites, reds, rosé, Cap Classique-style MCC sparkling and limited flagship blends. Since 1995, brothers Marius and Japie Roux have converted a long grape-supply chapter into a complete estate brand that still feels like a working family farm rather than a theme-park winery.

Roux family story

  • Mid-century roots at neighbouring Uitkyk, where Walter James du Preez Roux (Wally) grew up and briefly farmed
  • Love-story geography: Walter married “the girl next door,” then around 1960 bought Die Fonteine from father-in-law Daniel Mathys de Kock
  • De Kock, a tobacco farmer from Rhodesia, had purchased the property in 1948 so his children schooling in Stellenbosch would have a nearby family base
  • Until 1972, grapes were processed on farm and sold as bulk wine; in 1973 on-farm winemaking stopped as international sanctions crushed export pathways, and grapes were sold off instead
  • Early 1990s — Marius’s trip to Napa Valley reignited ambition; he persuaded Wally and brothers Wrensch and Japie to rebuild. Within six months a cellar rose from a bare concrete slab
  • 1995 — the Somerbosch Wines flag was hoisted; by 2000 every grape on the farm was vinified in-house, timed with the post-sanctions opening of markets
  • Roles settled naturally: Marius into viticulture, nursing parcels according to diverse soil composition; Japie into the cellar, chasing honest variety expression and balance
  • Shared mantra to customers: have as much fun drinking the wines as the brothers have making them

The result is an intimate Helderberg destination—garden tables, vineyard edges and mountain backdrop—suited to family lunch, celebration tasting or a casual R44 pause.

Wine ranges

Somerbosch keeps both everyday drinkers and collectors in view (shop vintages rotate):

  • Bright whites such as Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc
  • Rosé for warm Helderberg afternoons
  • Approachable reds and blends (for example Shiraz/Merlot) plus noble single cultivars
  • MCC sparkling wines for celebratory flights (often by prior arrangement)
  • Historical entry-level storytelling under names such as Poker Hill in older brand materials
  • Kylix — limited estate flagship blend released only when nature allows a wine worthy of the title, aimed at connoisseurs

The house style is fresh and approachable without abandoning Helderberg seriousness when the vintage supports a Kylix-level bottle.

Tasting and signature pairing

Current published options on somerbosch.co.za (reconfirm tariffs when booking):

  • 3 wines tasting — about ZAR 80
  • 6 wines tasting — about ZAR 150
  • MCC tasting — sparkling selection by prior arrangement at about ZAR 35 per glass
  • Signature wine & ice cream pairing — about ZAR 150 per person: Pinotage, Shiraz and Merlot with Somerbosch’s own home-made red wine ice cream (bookings essential)

Flights can be taken in the tasting room or on the patio with farm views. Deli snack platters—artisanal cheeses and preserves—pair neatly with the wines. Groups larger than four should book ahead via bistro@somerbosch.co.za or 021 855 3615.

Bistro and events

Somerbosch Bistro, with chef Zenta leading the kitchen team, serves breakfast and lunch from a rotating à-la-carte menu designed to stay exciting rather than static. Indoor and garden seating look toward vines and Helderberg slopes; waiters can suggest wine matches from the estate list. The same team supports celebrations and functions with full catering attention. Wine sales typically continue after restaurant service ends.

Published hours: restaurant, wine tastings and deli daily 09:00–16:00; wine sales daily 09:00–17:00.

Helderberg itinerary fit

Somerbosch is a natural Helderberg / R44 anchor: book the ice-cream pairing or a six-wine flight in the morning, settle into bistro lunch, ask whether Kylix is available for collectors, then continue toward Winery Road, other Helderberg cellars or Somerset West. Families appreciate the relaxed working-farm mood; sparkling fans should arrange MCC ahead rather than assuming walk-in bubbles.

Visit tips

  • The ice-cream pairing is the signature—reserve it; do not assume same-day capacity
  • Groups of more than four must book tastings in advance
  • Ask the bistro team for evolving food-and-wine matches rather than only fixed pairings
  • Remember GPS may show Die Fonteine while marketing says Somerbosch—same farm
  • Daily opening supports spontaneous stops, but still phone on public holidays
  • Collectors: enquire about current-vintage Kylix before assuming it is on the shelf
  • Combine morning Helderberg tastings with an afternoon coastal or Somerset West plan if heat builds
