Simonsig Wine Estate is a wine farm in Stellenbosch, Western Cape. About 41 km from Cape Town.
Simonsig Family Vineyards is an independent, family-owned Stellenbosch wine estate forever linked to two South African firsts: the creation of Cap Classique and the founding of the Stellenbosch Wine Route. On Kromme Rhee Road in Koelenhof / Bottelary country, the Malan family has farmed and welcomed visitors for generations—crafting Kaapse Vonkel and a full spectrum of still wines that express Simonsberg–Stellenbosch terroir. For anyone tracing the story of Méthode Cap Classique or planning a classic Stellenbosch wine-route day, Simonsig is both origin point and living destination.
Frans Malan purchased the land from his in-laws in the mid-twentieth century (family timeline cites the 1942–1964 formative era), expanded the farm, and built a modern cold-fermentation cellar—among the first of its kind for a private South African cellar. The first Simonsig-label wines appeared around 1968 (Chenin Blanc/Steen, Riesling, Clairette blanche), with Pinotage following soon after. In 1971, inspired by Champagne, Frans produced South Africa’s first traditional-method bottle-fermented sparkling wine: Kaapse Vonkel, birth of the Cap Classique category. The same year he co-founded the Stellenbosch Wine Route with peers from Spier and Delheim and opened Simonsig’s doors to the public.
Sons Johan, Francois, and Pieter carried the second generation; today grandchildren including Christelle and cellarmaster Michael Malan represent the continuing family line. Simonsig is also among the historic First 14 wine estates granted WO estate status in 1973. Celebrations around 50 years of Kaapse Vonkel and releases such as old-vine Langbult Steen mark an estate that innovates without leaving its roots.
Simonsig farms substantial vineyard hectares across the Simonsberg–Stellenbosch ward near Koelenhof (approximately 33.87°S, 18.83°E), a short detour off the R44 north of Stellenbosch town. Diverse soils and aspects support Cap Classique base wines, Chenin Blanc, Pinotage, Cabernet, Syrah, and Cape blends. Sustainability programmes span environmental, social, and economic spheres—framed by the Malan commitment to leave a positive legacy rather than merely a footprint. The estate anchors the Greater Simonsberg sub-route of the network its founder helped create.
Cap Classique remains the emotional and historical core:
The philosophy is clear: internationally regarded excellence from Stellenbosch terroir, always paired with Cape hospitality.
The tasting room welcomes guests daily (excluding Good Friday, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day), with last seating typically 30 minutes before closing. Options include Tasting of the Day, Sparkle with Simonsig (six Cap Classique expressions), Build Your Own flights across categories, Sip and Paint on Kaapse Vonkel bottles, sabrage experiences, and cellar tours. Platters and Neapolitan-style pizzas accompany tastings under oaks in summer or by the fireplace in winter. Restaurant dining complements the wine programme. Contact: +27 21 888 4915; Kromme Rhee Road, Koelenhof, Stellenbosch District.
Nowhere else can you taste the birthplace style of Cap Classique with the family that pioneered it, on a farm that also co-founded organised Stellenbosch wine tourism. Large enough to offer variety, yet still family-directed, Simonsig suits first-time visitors, sparkling-wine enthusiasts, and locals celebrating milestones. It is a must on any South Africa wine route focused on history and hospitality.
From Stellenbosch, head north on the R44 toward Koelenhof and follow Kromme Rhee Road signage. Book Sparkle, sabrage, or paint experiences ahead. Combine with Bottelary or other northern Stellenbosch stops. Magnums and large formats make memorable gifts—ask in the tasting room. Confirm pizza/platter availability if visiting with children or larger groups.
Simonsig’s tasting menu is built for discovery: Sparkle with Simonsig walks guests through six Cap Classique expressions from Kaapse Vonkel to Cuvée Royale; sabrage and bottle-painting experiences turn sparkling wine into celebration theatre; Build Your Own flights mix Cap Classique with Cultivar and Malan Vineyard Selection bottles such as Redhill Pinotage, Tiara, and Frans Malan Cape Blend. Under oak trees or beside the winter fireplace, pizzas and platters keep visits social—true to Frans Malan’s belief that wine is a gift of nature made for people’s enjoyment.
As co-founder farm of the Stellenbosch Wine Route and birthplace of Cap Classique, Simonsig carries unmatched narrative weight in Koelenhof / Bottelary country. Third-generation cellar leadership and old-vine projects like Langbult Steen show the estate still pushing forward. Add it early in a northern Stellenbosch day, book special experiences ahead, and taste sparkling wine at its South African source before exploring neighbouring cellars.
Whether you are tracing Cap Classique history, celebrating with Kaapse Vonkel, or filling the boot with Redhill Pinotage and Tiara, Simonsig remains a generous, route-defining Stellenbosch wine estate where Malan family hospitality meets sparkling pioneering spirit.

Simonsig Estate is a limited family stop: relaxed outdoor tastings under the oaks with Neapolitan pizzas and platters at Vonkel. Casual food, brunch and lunch options plus lawns make a meal with children possible if they are content to sit outdoors. No dedicated playground is verified on current official pages — so pack patience rather than expecting jungle gyms or structured play. The estate uses family-owned branding, but amenities for kids are mainly food-led. Ideal for a pizza lunch with well-settled children, not a full play-focused day out. Confirm Vonkel hours before you visit and ask which outdoor tables sit closest to open lawn.
