South Africa’s first Demeter biodynamic wine farm

Reyneke Organic Wines (Reyneke Wines) is a pioneering organic and biodynamic estate on the ridge of the Polkadraai Hills, overlooking False Bay just outside Stellenbosch. On farm Uitzicht—acquired by the Reyneke family in 1988—Johan Reyneke converted conventional vineyards first to organic practice and then to full biodynamic farming. Reyneke became the first South African wine producer certified by Demeter International, the world’s leading biodynamic accreditation body (estate narratives also cite Debio/IFOAM organic certification milestones around 2007, with Demeter recognition following as the landmark biodynamic step).

The house line—“We’ve made great progress. We’re nearly back where we started”—captures the philosophy: fewer chemicals, natural balance over balance sheets, and wines that honestly reflect soil, climate and cultivation method. Decomposed granitic Polkadraai soils yield perfumed, elegant wines with depth and structure; many bottles are vegan-friendly and Demeter-certified biodynamic.

Place, scale and people

The farm sits on north-easterly Polkadraai slopes with elevations commonly described around 250–350 m, False Bay influence moderating summer heat. Published profiles place the working farm on the order of ~80 hectares (Uitzicht historically framed as ~90 acres at purchase—confirm current planted vs conservation split on visit). Johan Reyneke took over farming from his mother in the early 1990s and bottled the first Reyneke-label wine from the 1998 vintage. The estate has since become a teaching reference for organic and biodynamic viticulture in South Africa, with Johan a prominent advocate for soil health and worker-centred farming.

How the vineyards work

Reyneke vineyards are herbicide-, pesticide- and fungicide-free in the conventional sense. Companion plants outcompete weeds, fix nitrogen and harbour beneficial insects. Ducks control snails and contribute fertility. Dandelions are allowed so mealybugs prefer weed roots over vines. Natural fungicides such as copper and sulphur are used sparingly, with ongoing trials of biological controls (trichoderma, metabolites). Biodynamic preparations—herbal, mineral and organic substances—are added to compost and applied as field sprays in homeopathic quantities. Planting, pruning and harvest follow natural and cosmic cycles. The farm is independently certified so practice matches marketing claims.

Wine ranges

Reyneke bottles across complementary tiers, all rooted in the same farming ethic:

1. Reserve — flagship wines from special vintages: Reserve White (often Sauvignon Blanc with oak/lees complexity) and Reserve Red (historically Cabernet-led or Syrah-prominent depending on vintage—confirm the pour in front of you). Produced only when the season justifies the label. 2. Biodynamic Range — core Demeter-certified estate wines grown by Johan on Reyneke farms: examples include Biodynamic Sauvignon Blanc (kiwi, lime, elderflower, mineral finish), Biodynamic Syrah (sour cherry, mulberry, white pepper, allspice) and related cuvées. Vegan-friendly messaging is explicit on this tier. 3. Vinehugger — certified organic entry tier (e.g. Chenin Blanc and red blends under Western Cape / Stellenbosch designations) for everyday drinking with the same farming conscience. 4. Cornerstone (also referenced historically as Capstone in some trade copy) — social-impact red blend (commonly Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc components). Proceeds and partner models fund farm-worker education and home-ownership initiatives—Reyneke’s “wine for good” story is as important as the glass.

Cellar style across ranges is precise and restrained: low intervention, letting biodynamic fruit speak, with freshness and granitic perfume as Polkadraai signatures.

Stellenbosch Valley itinerary fit

Pair Reyneke with other Polkadraai Hills specialists (granite soils, Chenin, Cabernet Franc, sustainable farming) for a west-of-Stellenbosch morning. Book Reyneke first—appointment windows are finite—and leave time to discuss Reserve vs Biodynamic vs Vinehugger vs Cornerstone. Ideal for travellers who prioritise Demeter biodynamics, vegan-friendly pours and ethical supply-chain stories over lawn entertainment.
