Remhoogte Wine Estate: Family Simonsberg Winery in Stellenbosch

On the foothills of the Simonsberg, Remhoogte Wine Estate is a family-owned Stellenbosch wine estate where steep slopes, ancient soils, and cooling Atlantic winds shape wines of depth and presence. Brothers Chris and Rob Boustred work alongside their father Murray, continuing a hands-on legacy that began when Murray and Juliet Boustred acquired the farm in 1994. Visitors come for expressive estate wines, immersive masterclasses, wildlife roaming the lower meadows, and fire-driven dining at VUUR—making Remhoogte a standout Simonsberg stop on the Stellenbosch wine route.

Overview and History

The name Remhoogte derives from Dutch “rem” (brake) and “hoogte” (heights)—a nod to settlers who needed wagon brakes on these steep Simonsberg approaches. The farm was demarcated and sold as Remhoogte as early as 1812. When Murray Boustred purchased the property in the mid-1990s, the family committed to estate-grown wine; the first vintage followed in 1995 with assistance from Jean Daneel. Lower vineyards were later removed to favour wildlife and fynbos, while steeper south and south-west slopes—once difficult to cultivate—were planted to yield some of the estate’s finest fruit.

Chris Boustred joined as winemaker in 2007 after experience in Stellenbosch, Bordeaux, Margaret River, and Napa; Rob followed in 2011 to lead sales and marketing. Today the family still lives and works on the farm, keeping production intentionally focused rather than industrial in scale. Flagship storytelling includes the Sir Thomas Cullinan Reserve, named for Murray’s great-grandfather, founder of the Premier Mine where the Cullinan Diamond was discovered.

Terroir and Location

Remhoogte sits on Simonsberg foothills along the R44 corridor (approximately 33.88°S, 18.85°E). Roughly half of the ±60 ha farm is under vine, with Merlot, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, and a cherished old Chenin Blanc block among plantings. Cool south and south-west aspects and summer south-easterly Atlantic influence extend ripening. Estate-grown, made, and bottled wines remain central to identity. Wildlife—zebra, springbok, wildebeest, nyala, and more—often visible from the tasting room, reinforces the sense of a working farm in balance with nature.

Signature Wines and Styles

The portfolio is structured in clear tiers:

  • Boustred Range – the pinnacle of the estate; refined, luxury expressions including standout Chenin Blanc from select Honeybunch parcels in supreme vintages
  • Reserve Range – exceptional parcels, structured and complex, shaped by patience and precision
  • Estate Range – honest wines of character reflecting diverse Simonsberg soils and slopes
  • Free To Be Range – creative, boundary-pushing wines where Chris explores cultivars and techniques beyond usual rules—vibrant, unexpected, conversation-starting

Across ranges, the house style emphasises presence, depth, and wines “made to be remembered” rather than rushed.

Visitor Experience

The tasting room offers Premium, Reserve, and Boustred flights, plus an in-depth Masterclass Tasting hosted by Chris and Rob (minimum group size applies) exploring soils, terroir, and flagship bottles with flatbreads. Cellar tours deepen the story. Flatbreads pair casually with tastings against panoramic farm and mountain views. VUUR Restaurant, set in former horse stables beneath an ancient oak, specialises in open-fire cooking paired with Remhoogte wines; it has earned international steak-restaurant recognition and Eat Out stars—book well ahead. Accommodation options such as Zebra Cottage or Lodge allow overnight stays among vines and game. Wine Society membership unlocks discounts and member events.

Why Visit Remhoogte

Remhoogte uniquely blends family intimacy, Simonsberg vineyard seriousness, safari-like wildlife moments, and destination dining. Masterclasses with the Boustred brothers offer rare producer access, while Free To Be wines appeal to curious drinkers. It is a high-value stop for visitors who want more than a quick pour—ideal for couples, wine students, and food travellers exploring Stellenbosch’s Simonsberg flank.

Practical Visit Tips

Find Remhoogte on the R44 in the Simonsberg area of Stellenbosch; it pairs naturally with other northern Stellenbosch and Simonsberg estates. Reserve VUUR and masterclasses early. Bring binoculars if wildlife viewing appeals, and confirm tasting menu choices online before arrival. Overnight cottage stays sell out in peak season—plan ahead for a sunrise-over-meadow experience.

Masterclasses, Wildlife, and Fire Dining

Remhoogte’s visitor arc is unusually complete for a family Simonsberg estate. Daytime tastings range from accessible Estate and Free To Be flights to Reserve depth and Boustred pinnacle pours; the Masterclass with Chris and Rob Boustred turns soils and philosophy into a shared table experience. Outside the glass, zebra and antelope on the meadows create a safari-adjacent backdrop rare on the Stellenbosch wine route. After dark—or for a long lunch—VUUR’s open-flame cooking in the old stables pairs smoke and heat with Remhoogte wines, earning recognition that draws gastronomes as readily as wine collectors.

Overnight cottages extend the story into morning light over vines and game. Wine Society events and comparative masterclasses with other Stellenbosch producers deepen engagement for locals and repeat international guests. Whether your focus is Chenin Blanc from Honeybunch parcels, structured reds from steep south-west slopes, or simply a memorable R44 stop with soul, Remhoogte delivers Simonsberg character without corporate distance—family faces, farm views, and wines made to be felt.
