Natte Valleij Wines on Greater Simonsberg

Natte Valleij Wines occupies a historic Cape Dutch farm on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg, at the meeting point of the Stellenbosch and Paarl wine routes — mapped for visitors under Greater Simonsberg. The property sits on the R44 (Klapmuts Road), about 12 km from Stellenbosch and 17 km from Paarl, roughly 4 km from the N1 (Klapmuts turnoff) and around half an hour from central Cape Town.

Granted in 1715, Natte Valleij is framed by a homestead, old wine cellars, brandy stills, mature gardens, ancient trees, pergolas, ponds and lime-washed walls. The Milner family bought the run-down winery in 1969 after wine production had ceased in the 1950s. Grandfather Sir Mordaunt Milner, a noted South African horse breeder, turned the land into a thoroughbred stud for roughly three decades. In 2005 the horses left, barrels returned to the centuries-old winery, and third-generation Alexander (Alex) Milner — Stellenbosch University–trained — restarted winemaking with a deliberately traditional, low-intervention ethos.

The farm still “oozes a sense of history” in the estate’s own words: whitewashed walls, mature gardens and an old brandy still in the grounds remind visitors that this was once a large regional cellar before mid-century silence.

Philosophy: old vines, minimal interference

Alex’s focus is Cinsault and other characterful Cape parcels — especially forgotten patches of old dryland bush vines whose “dogged persistence” he champions. Grapes are sought across Stellenbosch, Darling, the Swartland / Coastal Region and neighbouring Simonsberg–Paarl sites, then vinified in the rambling historic cellar at Natte Valleij. The house philosophy is simple: respect soil, vine and wine; guide fruit into characterful bottles with minimal pretence. Old Vine Project–certified vineyards appear in the range where applicable.

Natural ferments, concrete eggs, foudres and seasoned barrels appear repeatedly in technical notes — tools chosen to keep energy and site voice rather than heavy new-oak makeup. Critics such as Tim James have highlighted the charm of the range and its export-leaning availability.

Signature wines

Portfolio highlights (vintages and prices move — confirm on nattevalleijwines.co.za):

  • Stellenbosch Cinsault — old Helderberg-facing bush vines on decomposed granite, ~7 km from False Bay; concrete-egg maturation; premium single-vineyard pricing historically around R325
  • Darling Cinsault — isolated 1978 bush vines on Malmesbury formation; Atlantic-cooled; barrel-aged; similarly premium
  • Coastal Cinsault — multi-site coastal blend from dryland parcels spanning decades of vine age; approachable pricing historically ~R170
  • Axle Chenin Blanc (W.O. Darling) — 1985 dryland bush vines; natural ferment in seasoned barrels; sur lie ageing; made with family in mind
  • P.O.W. (W.O. Simonsberg / Paarl) — Bordeaux-leaning Cabernet–Merlot (blend ratios shift by vintage; Cinsault has appeared in some recent takes) honouring an Italian prisoner of war who worked on the farm in WWII (inscription P.O.W. B.T. 27-12-1943); long large-oak maturation
  • Staatmaker — Cabernet Sauvignon with Cinsault; old Cape dependability in a glass
  • NAT — lighter, fresher Darling Pinotage from dryland bush vines
  • Swallow the Blend — Syrah-led R&D blend named for pearl-breasted swallows nesting in the cellar; often the value play (~R120 historically)
  • Further releases such as n’Kaapse Ode (Clairette–Chenin) appear via retailers

Most volume is export-oriented; the farm website and cellar remain important local sources.

Things to do on the farm

Official activities emphasise a slower Simonsberg day:

  • Wine tasting in a well-appointed tasting room — wines tasted and bought on site
  • Cellar tours by arrangement; during February–March harvest guests may watch winemaking
  • Walking and mountain biking into a neighbouring nature reserve (Springbok, Wildebeest, Zebra; possible Eland / Gemsbok) and up Simonsberg slopes
  • Bird watching — about 180 species recorded (Wood Owl, Amethyst Sunbird, Southern Boubou, Glossy Ibis and many regulars)
  • Farm accommodation and weddings / country celebrations among the lime-washed historic setting (enquire separately)

Hours are typically by arrangement rather than a rigid seven-day walk-in schedule — contact the farm before travel. Guests staying overnight get the fullest sense of gardens, stillness and early-morning birdlife.

Greater Simonsberg itinerary fit

Natte Valleij suits travellers who want history + old-vine Cinsault at the Stellenbosch–Paarl seam, plus optional overnight stays and nature walks. Combine with other Greater Simonsberg / R44 estates for a northern Stellenbosch day, or use it as a calm base between Cape Town, Paarl and Franschhoek without entering the densest Helderberg tourist strip.

A thoughtful tasting order is Coastal Cinsault → Stellenbosch or Darling single-vineyard Cinsault → Axle Chenin → P.O.W. or Staatmaker, finishing with Swallow if you want a casual Syrah-led pour.

Visit tips

  • Book tasting, cellar access and accommodation by phone or email — do not assume walk-in
  • Harvest cellar visits are seasonal (Feb–Mar)
  • Wear walking shoes if you plan the reserve or Simonsberg slopes
  • Confirm which Cinsault / Chenin / P.O.W. vintages are open for tasting
  • Respect the working farm and historic gardens — especially around wedding or stay guests
  • Bring binoculars if birding is your secondary mission
