Estate wines from a mountain amphitheatre

Keermont Vineyards is a specialist Stellenbosch Berg estate in the Upper Blaauwklippen Valley—also called Paradyskloof (Paradise Valley)—set in a natural amphitheatre between the Helderberg and Stellenbosch Mountain ranges. Every bottle is grown, produced and bottled on the farm. That single rule shapes everything visitors taste: parcel farming on steep slopes, spontaneous ferments, seasoned oak, gravity flow, and hand packaging by a tight team of about fifteen people.

If you want mountain terroir without a mega-tourism façade, Keermont is a destination tasting—limited walk-in hours, appointment midweek, and wines that read as place first.

Place, family and team

The Wraith family moved from Gauteng in 2001 and bought two adjacent farms in 2003 that became Keermont. Owner Mark Wraith (with Monica and their children) lives on the property and stays involved from long-term strategy to vines to tasting-room hospitality. Alex Starey has led vineyards and cellar since redevelopment began around 2005; he made the first Keermont vintages after the brand was registered in 2007, following an intensive parcel-by-parcel study of soils, aspects and clones. Long-serving staff—including farm supervisor Dominic Jonsson (on the farm since the purchase) and cellar right-hand Shane De Vries—underline continuity unusual for a relatively young Stellenbosch label.

The Blaauwklippen River bisects the farm and marks the Helderberg–Stellenbosch range boundary. Vineyards sit roughly 250–400 m above sea level; altitude climbs about 200 m over only 1.7 km of farm length. Warmer north-facing Helderberg slopes meet cooler west-facing Stellenbosch aspects. False Bay and the Atlantic lie about 12.5 km beyond the Helderberg, feeding cool summer south-easterlies. Guardian Peak delays sunrise year-round, keeping mornings cool for slow ripening and phenolic development. Soils are typically deep red clay-rich loams from sandstone and granite, with colluvial quartzitic sandstone and iron-rich organic matter; riverine alluvium adds further pockets. Tracts of pristine fynbos and renosterveld separate vineyard blocks and encourage natural predator balance. Keermont farms under the Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) scheme and keeps over 100 ha in conservation beside roughly 28 ha of vines (about 18 ha red / 10 ha white in published breakdowns).

Viticulture and cellar philosophy

Philosophy leans natural over industrial: fewer chemical fertilisers and pesticides, irrigation kept as low as possible, and each pocket matched to variety, rootstock and clone. Planting densities run about 2 600–5 700 vines per hectare. Most vines are trained on a triple-lengthened Perold system; smaller areas use bush vine and stok-by-paal (“Hermitage”) systems. Red plantings include Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Mourvèdre, Petit Verdot and Malbec; whites include Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Roussanne, Viognier and Marsanne.

In the cellar the aim is gentle guidance rather than heavy intervention: indigenous yeast, open-top concrete and stainless tanks with hand punch-downs, mostly second- and third-fill French oak (reds up to two years), whites barrel-fermented and matured on lees for ten to twelve months, no pump (gravity only—Keermont famously does not even own one), little filtration on whites and none on reds, hand bottling, corking, labelling and box checks. Bottle maturation of six to twelve months before release is typical. Wines are suitable for vegans.

Wines to know

The Keermont Range and Single Vineyard Series are the two tasting tracks.

  • Terrasse — barrel-fermented white blend named for terraced mountainside vineyards; Chenin-led (dryland bush-vine Bobbejaan and trellised Low Road), with Chardonnay for mid-palate weight, Sauvignon Blanc from dryland Uitkyk (planted 1988) for acidity, and aromatic lifts of Roussanne, Marsanne and Viognier. Blend percentages shift with vintage.
  • Estate Syrah — typically woven from Steepside (north-facing, deep red clay; softer, spicy fullness), Topside (west-facing ~400 m, rocky sandstone, unirrigated; aromatic, firm acid) and Sweetwater (cool rocky valley below the Fleurfontein spring; lighter, herbal elegance), often with a dash of Mourvèdre.
  • Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and other Bordeaux varieties from amphitheatre slopes; rare single-vineyard bottles such as Pondokrug Cabernet Franc when released.
  • Fleurfontein — straw / dessert style from vine-dried fruit (recent vintages often Sauvignon Blanc with Roussanne).
  • 4 Barrels Rosé and emerging Sweetwater Syrah experiments when the team bottles them.

Stellenbosch Berg itinerary fit

Pair Keermont with other Upper Blaauwklippen specialists—Kleinood is a natural neighbour for a Rhône-leaning Syrah contrast against Keermont’s multi-parcel mountain Syrah and Chenin-led Terrasse. This is not a casual drive-by tasting room: plan Friday or Saturday, or book midweek. Bring curiosity about parcels; the team loves talking Steepside versus Topside versus Sweetwater.
