Da Capo Vineyards is a wine farm in Elgin, Western Cape. About 51 km from Cape Town.
Da Capo Vineyards is the Helderberg vineyard estate that grows the fruit for Idiom Wines, the Bottega family’s destination winery on the southern edge of the Stellenbosch wine region near Somerset West. In Italian, da capo means “from the beginning” (and playfully “from the Cape”). Vines were carefully laid out and planted from 1999 — the first planting of the farm as a purpose-built vineyard property.
Family storytelling also ties the name to a July 1990 Three Tenors encore: when Luciano Pavarotti asked which song to repeat, the reply was simply “Da Capo!” — a cultural thread that mirrors the Bottega family’s Italian roots in Friuli and Milan before Cape Town.
Alberto Bottega (born Milan 1942, emigrated 1950) and Valerie Bottega built Idiom as a legacy for children Roberto, Laura and Silvana. The public-facing wine, restaurant and tasting centre brand is Idiom; Da Capo remains the vineyard name on labels, about pages and company references (including Da Capo Vineyards (Pty) Ltd in trade listings). In 2016 Alberto and Roberto delivered the signature tasting centre and restaurant that turned the mountain farm into a full Helderberg destination.
Official visitor planning therefore runs through idiom.co.za — the live primary site — not generic wine-route directories. Architecture for the centre has been described in brand materials as New World modernism on an Old World foundation, matching the wines’ dual identity.
Da Capo nestles at the foot of granite mountains with slopes from roughly 200 to 350 metres, aspects facing north, west and south, on a property of about 150 hectares. The landmark Idiom Conical Peak makes the farm readable from afar. Soils include decomposed granite / Tukulu with clay bases and Table Mountain Sandstone influences. Maritime air from False Bay, powerful wind (smaller berries, intense flavour) and multiple micro-terroirs underpin the wide cultivar list.
Winemaker Reino Thiart (winemaker since 2007) works across some 20 varietals — one of the Cape’s more diverse estate plantings — spanning Bordeaux and Rhône inspiration, Italian classics (Sangiovese, Barbera and more) and Cape Blend thinking. His path from fine-wine sales in the UK and South Africa into the cellar informs a portfolio that can be styled reserved or aromatic depending on the bottle.
Fruit from Da Capo feeds Idiom’s collections:
Recent recognition highlighted on Idiom’s site includes Gold for Bordicon 2022 at the 2026 Global Cabernet Sauvignon Masters and continued Perold ABSA Cape Blend success — proof points for the vineyard’s Helderberg quality rather than marketing fluff. Shop pages also surface barrels such as Barbera, barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc and Rosso di Stellenbosch depending on vintage.
Day visitors experience Da Capo through Idiom Restaurant, the tasting centre and on-farm activities:
Panoramic views span vineyard, mountain and False Bay — a core reason the restaurant is booked as a destination lunch. Online wine sales and distribution contacts are also published on idiom.co.za for those who want Da Capo fruit in bottle after the visit. Sustainability projects protecting surrounding ecosystems form part of the estate’s public story.
Da Capo / Idiom is a natural southern Stellenbosch anchor: combine a Bordicon or Cape Blend tasting with lunch, then continue toward Somerset West, Sir Lowry’s Pass or other Helderberg estates. Allow time for the Knorhoek approach and for terrace views — this is not a five-minute checkbox farm. First-time guests often taste one lettered blend beside one Italian varietal to feel the “Cape Idiom” idea in the glass.
Da Capo is the vineyard estate; Idiom is the wine and hospitality brand built on it by the Bottega family.

Bordicon, Cape Blend and the wider lettered / Italian varietal set grown on Da Capo.
Keeping Da Capo Vineyards as its own farm_id preserves the Helderberg planting story, Conical Peak geography and 1999 origin narrative even when travellers search under Idiom. Point every practical link at idiom.co.za, celebrate the Bottega–Thiart portfolio, and treat Da Capo as the ground — granite, wind, False Bay light — under one of Stellenbosch’s most distinctive Italian–Cape wine destinations. Replace junk wineroute master URLs with the Idiom domain so SEO and visitors align.
