Storm Wines: three-ward Pinot Noir, by appointment only

Storm Wines is a small Hemel-en-Aarde producer dedicated to single-vineyard Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Husband-and-wife team Hannes and Nathalia Storm handcraft wines that map the valley’s three official wards—Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, and Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge. Official South African site: https://www.stormwines.co.za/. Prefer this domain over the unrelated US stormwines.com when linking or citing.

Visitor rule number one: tastings are by appointment only. This is not a walk-in cellar door. Email info@stormwines.co.za to arrange a visit. Published tasting fee: R200 per person. The tasting room is situated in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley appellation (regional Hemel-en-Aarde Wines listing). Book well ahead in Hermanus high season and whale months.

Origin story and philosophy

After 12 vintages working intimately with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the Hemel-en-Aarde (“Heaven-and-Earth”), Hannes Storm identified two tiny parcels with exceptional terroir. Vineyards in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley and Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley were planted to Pinot Noir in 2008. The maiden Storm vintage was 2012, released in August 2014 after about 18 months in bottle.

Storm’s stated aim is to steer the purest characteristics of each vineyard site toward bottle: small production, careful viticulture, minimal intervention in the cellar, and a nod to Old World temperament. Personality and site difference matter more than volume lines or sprawling SKU lists.

The only producer with Pinot from all three wards

Storm publicly claims a unique regional position: the only producer with Pinot Noirs from each of the three Hemel-en-Aarde appellations. That is the educational core of an appointment tasting—taste ward versus ward under one roof.

Published vineyard–wine map

  • Vrede Pinot Noir and Vrede Chardonnay — low-vigour, stony, clay-rich Bokkeveld shale soils in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley.
  • Ignis Pinot Noir — decomposed granite soils in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley.
  • Ridge Pinot Noir and Ridge Chardonnay — low-vigour, stony, clay-rich Bokkeveld shale in the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge.

Hemel-en-Aarde climate context

The Hemel-en-Aarde lies behind Hermanus, about 120 km from Cape Town, on the R320 toward Caledon. In 2009 the area was divided into the three wards above, with roughly 450 ha of vineyards region-wide at the time of Storm’s explanatory copy. Maritime climate, cool Atlantic influence, the summer Southeaster, and the Benguela Current moderate temperatures; higher rainfall than many Cape regions helps in drought years. Valley and Ridge sites sit largely on clay-rich Bokkeveld shale; Upper Valley sites often sit on lighter decomposed granite with clay in the subsoil—exactly the contrast Storm bottles as Ignis versus Vrede / Ridge.

Southern right whales visit Walker Bay roughly July–November, overlapping peak tourism—another reason to secure Storm appointments early.

How to visit (practical)

1. Email info@stormwines.co.za and request a tasting appointment. 2. Expect the published R200 pp tasting fee unless the estate advises otherwise. 3. Use maps / the Google Maps link published on the Storm contact page; postal address listed as PO Box 431, Hermanus, 7200, Western Cape. 4. Combine with open Hemel-en-Aarde farms (Creation, Spookfontein, etc.) only around your confirmed Storm slot—do not reverse the order and hope for a walk-in. 5. Always cite https://www.stormwines.co.za/ — not the US stormwines.com domain.

Place on a Walker Bay itinerary

Storm is a specialist appointment for drinkers who care about Pinot site expression. It rewards preparation: read the three-ward map, then taste Vrede, Ignis, and Ridge side by side. Skip Storm if you only want spontaneous cellar-door browsing; choose Spookfontein, Stanford Hills, or Creation-style daily rooms instead.

Pairing Storm with neighbouring farms

Because Storm is appointment-only, build your day around the confirmed slot. Open daily rooms on the R320—such as Creation on the Ridge or Spookfontein’s Bordeaux-focused tasting—work as flexible anchors before or after Storm. Do not stack multiple appointment-only cellars without written confirmations for each. If your group includes non-drinkers or children, Storm’s intimate format may be less suitable than larger hospitality estates; ask when you email whether the booking is adult-focused tasting only.

Retail and restaurant placement of Storm wines outside the valley varies by vintage allocation; the surest way to taste the full three-ward Pinot set side by side remains the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde appointment. When you write to info@stormwines.co.za, include party size, preferred date window, and whether you specifically want Vrede, Ignis, and Ridge poured together.
