Robertson · Western Cape
Springfield Estate is a wine farm in Robertson, Western Cape. About 141 km from Cape Town.
Springfield Estate is a family-run Robertson Valley farm on the R317 between Robertson and Bonnievale, owned by ninth-generation descendants of French Huguenots who arrived from the Loire in 1688. The farm has been in the Bruwer family since 1898. The motto Made on Honour drives cellar and vineyard decisions: release only vintages that meet their bar, even when wild-yeast and minimal-intervention choices are risky.
Official About copy stresses natural winemaking—wild yeasts on many wines, gravity-fed reds without pumps/crushers/presses where possible, unfiltered/unrefined bottling when they can, and intervention preferred in the vineyard over the cellar. Soils range from quartz-rocky blocks to lime-rich ground reminiscent of Burgundy/Sancerre language on the site, plus sandy loam near the Breede River.
Homepage Tasting section:
Tasting hours (homepage):
Contact page discrepancy: Contact lists Saturdays and public holidays as 09:00–16:00 (not 15:00). Resolve Sat/PH close by phone before you plan a late Saturday tasting. Prefer calling +27 23 626 3661 or emailing tastingroom@springfieldestate.com.
Official Tours copy: free cellar tours on weekdays (~one hour). During harvest (January–March) only 11:00 & 15:00. April–December: anytime between 09:00 & 16:00 on weekdays. Closed public holidays & weekends for tours. Tell tasting-room staff on arrival or book ahead via tastingroom@springfieldestate.com.
Reds highlighted: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir. Whites: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling. Signature storytelling around Wild Yeast Chardonnay—unwooded, native yeasts, slow ferment in underground cement (site copy notes a long, volatile ferment). Do not invent medal catalogues or cheese-box rand prices from tertiary winelands directories; picnic/cheese products on third-party sites are not confirmed here as official tariffs.
Wine Club packages are marketed from the homepage (from R950 per quarter in site copy)—separate from day tasting.
The cellar itself dates to 1902 in About copy, geared to back-to-basics handling: whole-berry red ferments, long barrel and bottle ageing when the wine needs it, and an acceptance that wild yeast can mean lost vintages some years. That honesty is part of the “Made on Honour” pitch visitors hear at the counter.
Springfield suits drinkers who care about minimal intervention and wild yeast, with a clear published tasting fee and free educational cellar tours on weekdays. No restaurant is claimed on the official tasting/tour pages used for this brief—pair with a neighbouring R317 lunch stop. Wined GPS in seed: 33°50'12.1"S 19°54'54.0"E.
Address on Contact: R317 Road, Robertson, Western Cape. Emails: info@springfieldestate.com (general) and tastingroom@springfieldestate.com (reservations/tours).
Arrive with time for both a five-wine flight and—if weekday—a cellar walk. Harvest visitors should lock the 11:00 or 15:00 tour slots rather than assuming open-ended timing. Bus groups are explicitly discouraged; split into smaller parties or book another estate for large coaches.

Springfield rewards travellers who treat it as a serious Robertson wine stop, not a rushed drive-by. Confirm tasting hours and whether a cellar walk is available before you leave town, and ask which Methode Ancienne, Whole Berry, or other core labels are open that day—allocations and vintages shift. Pair Springfield with neighbouring Breede River cellars that publish walk-in hours if your group wants a fuller day, but keep lunch plans honest: only book food where Springfield’s official pages (or your booking reply) confirm it. Summer heat on the valley floor is real—bring water, a cooler for purchases, and allow time for the estate’s slower, story-led tasting style rather than a supermarket flight.
